The beginning of a new journey
#1
So I made my pick for my first car to race.  It is the 1/8 scale ARRMA Typhon V5 6S.  I originally wanted a kit to build from the ground up, but the costs elevate by 60-75% going that route, so I will wait until I get my feet wet and know for sure I want to do this.  Also, given what I have read, you really need to do a complete teardown and go through the Typhon before running it.  So I will get to feed my build bug that way.

After doing some LOS stuff, and some racing, I will start on the FPV side of things.  I plan to use Ronin's wiring diagram he came up with as boiler plate for my FPV system.  Then I need to convince some of the club guys to go FPV.  As Huggy mentioned, FPV against LOS is a loser on ground based RC.  Maybe if the guys at the club see the video below, which isn't FPV, just a GoPro on the car, but the visual perspective will be similar, then they may be more inclined.  We will see.

Anyway, this is all new to me so it will be a challenge, and I may come to the group for help/ideas.

I had a blast with mine though I really only ran it a couple of months until we found FPV. It would be cool to have a larger scale track than the nitro was running on in the video as the Typhon on 6s would be too much for a track that size. Though it has me intrigued how FPV would look like with full sends like he does with it here:

When you get that kind of air the blipping the throttle and or breaking will cause the tires to balloon and help flip the car.

Been collecting cat hair. I seem to recall at this time a year ago the v5 arrmas came with a pretty crappy steering servo (Spektrum branded). I seem to recall when mine failed on the Kraton in the first session it bogged down the ESC like an overload.

The debris protection on the ESC, is that just window screen material?

As you noted, 6s is a bit much for most tracks and the guys running the Typhon in its various versions around here are running 4S.

Exactly window screen, think we put that on there when running in the leaves last year they kept getting in there and jamming up the fan. We never made it to the summer months but it was going to be obviously needed to run on hot days especially if running on grass. The taller the grass the harsher the load for the motor.

Makes sense to lower the voltage, I was wondering even 3s. Plus you can always change the pinion gear on the motor to dial it down too.

Gah - no. Can't get into another hobby now!

My nephew is enthusiastic but a bit too young and chaotic for drones for now. But in the summer we FPV'd his toy-grade remote control car by zip-tying my tinywhoop to the bonnet (hood) and it was crazy fun.

The ground is for dead people.

Also not sure where you're located but these guys buy up brand new RTR's and break them down into parts for resale. Especially if you're going to do any bashing.

I know there are guys that do this on Ebay too but these guys came highly recommended. They shipped fast too.

Hi Krohsis,

Very interesting. Again, my problem is a place to run the thing. Upon considering where I might
drive an RC car, well, I don't think that I have any. I actually have more space for flying than
for a ground vehicle. That said, I am interested to see how it goes for you.

Later, iFly   High Five

I have a 1/10th nitro truck. It’s got a 3.5 electric start engine on it. The thing is bat @#&* crazy to drive and easily goes 70mph. That said I’ve replaced a ton of parts on it. It will go airborne in a gust of wind. I think protecting the camera is going to be the toughest thing to do. They crash and roll all the time, so you might need an adjustable remote mount  Looking forward to some pictures/ vids, you might convince me to go fpv on the truck. Big Grin

Hi Kevin,

Yeah, you need a good Roll Cage. Kind of like they build into stock cars.

There are quite a few ideas to draw from for the FPV cam to keep it safe.  The Gopro will be a little more vulnerable, particularly if using something bigger than a Session.

Hi guys,

first post here.

I have just started FPV with my great grandson, we have a Maverick Quantum flux 3S each and I have setup FPV on them. Through summer it gets up to 40c here so we drive at night and it is a real blast. We also drive on days when it's cooler.

We usually drive around the streets here and can get a range of 450 metres. I have just upgraded our controllers so hpefully that range will increase. I am also looking at getting the Crossfire system, which should give us even longerr range.

I have built a track as well and plan on racing my great grandson when the weather cools down.

The setup we use is,

VTX - Tbs unify Pro 32, Camera - Foxeer Cat 3, Antenna's - Vas Crosshair Extreme and we use a 5" monitor.
