Where do I start PID tuning this quad?
#1
I have been trying to figure out PID tuning for almost 3 years, and I still just cannot figure it out - I've watched hundreds of tutorial videos, and read step-by-step 'manuals', but my old brain just can't grasp it - Can someone please take a look at this screenshot of my PIDToolbox blackbox, and give me an idea what exactly I need to tune? It's a 5 inch Apex, running 6s, and a Gopro 8 Black. Thank you to all who help out!

Honestly .. I fly stock pids and never had any issues. I’ve just now started with “profiles”.. hell, I’m still trying to figure out what rates I like

Like I said, I've watched every PID tuning video I could find, I just can't completely wrap my brain around it - I blame old age and autism LOL

I never mess with PID tuning, but I might change the rpm filtering a little sometimes, but only that.

Otherwise, my old brain is happy with experimenting with presets. There are some really good presets in BF.

I'm using the UAVTech w/Gopro preset, which is great on all my other quads, but this one it's not so great - Default tune doesn't feel locked in enough, so I was hoping I could get the UAV preset tuned better

You said the UAV tech GoPro preset doesn’t “feel” as good on this quad compared to your others..
What are the differences in the quads? Or are they exact builds?
UAVtech tech will get ur quad locked into to the nthe degree .. as long as it’s “clean”,, but don’t expect to fly it back with a bent prop and not smoke something..
I would go over the quad and see if something isn’t fully seated or tight..new props.. check fc mounting..

The step response in PID Toolbox is used to compare the curves between different PID values so that you can find the optimal one for your setup. Brian (the developer of PID toolbox) gives a good step by step tutorial here on how to get your basic PIDs setup.

He also has a discord, or a paid one-on-one consultation if you need that.

My other Apex build is exactly the same, the only difference being this one has a Skystars F405 stack, and the one that flies great is a Skystars F7 HD - Both are carrying the same camera and lipos, so the weight is the same. Both are running 4kHz PID loop, DSHOT 300, and I have gone over every nut and bolt to make sure everything is tight

F4 and F7 is the difference? I’m totally taking out of my a**… but thinking .. different gyros or cpu usage percentage?? Are they both on the same version of BF?
I would locate another F7 fc Install it.. and see what floats to the surface…
Like I said… I am totally speaking out of school.. but looking at it from “components” perspective..

Compared to the F4, the F7 has a faster processor, more memory, and more UARTs. Can't really compare them.

.. faster processor.. better filtering / flight???
I’m just spitballing..
if everything else is equal .. and the fc is the only outlier ..

Both are on v4.4 of Betaflight - Just for giggles I swapped the Skystars F405 with a Mamba F722 (re-pinned, same ESC) and ran 2 packs - I'm thinking it's something to do with the F405 FC, because the blackbox looks better with the F722 FC

Interesting test, but it looks like you have two sets of completely different PIDs on your FCs (80,130,50 vs 50,80,30)? Also the step response would depend on the data you fed it, if you flew in angle mode with limits set per the developers recommendations on both sets of data then it would be a fair comparison. Also what are the loop times of each FC and the logging rates?

Well, I feel like an idiot, when I swapped FCs I didn't apply the UAVTech preset like I usually do, I think this is the default tune - I didn't even realize I didn't add the preset until you pointed it out

As far as the others, I only fly in acro mode (airmode on), running 4k loop, and blackbox is gyro_scaled @ 1/2

I'm going to load the UAVTech preset into this FC, run a few packs, and see if it's still flying badly - If it flies bad on this FC as well, then I'll have to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb, and make sure every piece is tight
