Hi What are you flying now? Or which drones would you rather fly with? And why? Do you fly inside the house or outside? Or what drones do you have? Future builds will delve into higher cell counts. I don't fly in the house, only outside when the weather allows. I want to build a 3.5" 2004 or 2104 4S this year with an aim for a high powered freestyle basher that is fast and agile. I also have a 1408 build in the pipeline as soon as I source a 35A 4-in-1 and improve my soldering skills enough. Beyond that i have motors and some parts for an 1108 and 1303.5 build. My interests are mainly freestyle and maybe long range mountain surfing related. For videos of my flying, look around, I have posted many on the site. It has been windy blizzard conditions for days. Turned my only indoor whoop into a little 2" freestyle ripper. Have been taking time to update what needs it, and overhaul builds that aren't as good as I can make them. If the wind lets up maybe I'll bundle up and get my Dolphin back in the sky. For outdoor flying, I prefer open prop quads. My overall favorite size is 2.5-inch and the 2.5-inch GEPRC Phantom (Now the SMART Freestyle) is one of my favorite quads and can be flown anywhere. From my perspective, this size is the most fun overall to fly. I also like a 3-inch, but right now don't have any that are operational. A 3-inch is also fun to fly and is one that I would fly in the smaller spaces as well. There is not much difference between a 2.5-inch and a 3-inch. The 4-inch is my favorite size for larger spaces. When I have the space, this is the size that I go for as it is large enough, yet, not to large for most locations where there is enough space to actually fly. Also, a 4-inch can be fitted with 3-inch props; with or without prop guards. The 4-inch size is extremely smooth and sweet to fly, but does require a bit of space. Although I currently do not have any 5-inch quads (I lost both of them), this size is a step up from the 4-inch; very, very smooth to fly, easy cruiser if there is enough space. I have one 7-inch that is rarely flown. This craft requires a lot of space as it covers distance fast even with very little throttle. Most places where I would fly simply do not have enough open space. That said, it was designed as a rescue quad and heavy lifting rather than actually flying. In summary, the 2.5-inch is my all time favorite with a 4-inch coming in second. If I could have only one, it would be a 2.5-inch. I recently got all excited about FPV and brought my older large quads up to date, and bought a bunch of new small ones. The old ones were mostly kilts from an outfit called Flight Club FPV. You can still see them and the builds on You Tube. Mike made some beautiful stuff. The Tokio X is a 5" pod, one piece frame, F40 2400kv, camera sucks though. Still working on this one. Just replaced its cracked frame. The Phuket is a 3" pod, one piece frame, F20 3750kv, fun an fast, an old school 3", heavy. The Neutron is a 5" with a body, 2205 1750kv, fast and agile, my current fave, can't beat 6s at this size. The Proton is kinda cool, a convertible with F40 1600kv motors, 6s with 5" props or 4s with 6" props. Emuflight. The Lumenier CodeRed was another 3" kit, interlocking CF frame, 1407 3600kv, heavy, fast and quick. So those are all old kits and components. Pre Covid! All my old tiny whoops are binned. Since getting back to it big time I've bought a bunch of Bind and Fly, smaller stuff, and been blown away by how well small stuff flies now. First I got a BetaFPV Meteor 75 Pro, that was a revelation indoors and out. Then I got a BetaFPV HX115, 3" 2s, 7 minutes on 450mAh? I was blown away, it's mellow but flies crazy good, my first "toothpick". Got whoops? Need more whoops! Mobula6 lived up to the hype, best inside my house, camera isn't so good but I love it. Fractal 75 is a really interesting whoop design, precise flyer, love Quicksilver. Last but not least, first actually! Santa brought me Walksnail goggles and a Flywoo Nano Baby 1s, 1.6". My "how is this possible" revelation for 2024. It is a bit heavy though. I have been flying all of these. Outside. Except the Mob6 gets to come inside sometimes. I'm building from scratch now. A Carnage V2 3.5 frame with Walksnail. Sub 250 4s lightweight. Fingers crossed for a powerful, light freestyler, with great video. I think the biggest change in 6 years is easy to work on frames and the capabilities of small, light, quads. What I miss is the crazy variety of cool quads from before we knew what worked best Posts: 39 Threads: 7 Likes Received: 15 in 15 posts Likes Given: 286 Joined: Oct 2023 Reputation: 1 Interesting options, what do others fly? ►BUY ANY RTF or BNF KIT IF U R A BEGINNER◄ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (ᵔᴥᵔ) • Posts: 5,856 Threads: 47 Likes Received: 2,775 in 2,237 posts Likes Given: 7,614 Joined: Jul 2019 Reputation: 97 A bit of history... I started almost 6 years ago with a tiny whoop combo kit. This was a 31mm propped, brushed motor whoop with a plastic 65mm frame. The kit came with the quad, a transmitter, and a set of goggles. Yeah, this was an indoor craft and that is where I flew it. During the next months, I collected a bunch of small whoops, bought some and assembled some (I hate to say build as these are just plug motors and go) 65mm frame to 85mm frame. The bigger ones were harder to fly indoors so I started flying outdoors. I quickly determined that these small 1S, brushed motor, whoops did not far well in the wind; each flight seemed like just a fight against the wind. My first open prop, freestyle, quad was the EMAX TinyHawk II Freestyle. The original one; 2.5 inch, low profile, mean looking AVAN props, 2S, but using 2 1S batteries. Pretty cool, fun to fly, but the range was a little short. Next was my 2.5 inch GEPRC Phantom (analog) with more standard parts and the range that I was looking for. Great. Loved it. Lost it. Bummer. Now, I started building. My first was my 4-inch Phantom-X, next I built a clone of the GEPRC Phantom using an original 2.5-inch Phantom frame. From there, I went up the size ladder to 7-inch and now have gone back to the 2.5 and 3 inch quads. By the way, all of my builds have been sub-250 except for the 7-inch. My focus is on the sub-250 gram, FAA category 1, UAS (drones). Later, iFly |
