Upgrading Tinyhawk 2 VTX, worth it?
#1
I've recently upgraded to Crossfire, and it has been somewhat mind-blowing. My usual spot to fly is a small playground, next to the end of a football field. Before Crossfire, my controller signal would sporadically drop out just past the near goal post. After Crossfire, I can fly as far as I can see without a hint of signal drop-out! I don't have goggles yet; so, I can almost make it to the far goal post before I have trouble seeing the Tinyhawk.

My question is about the VTX. Right now, all I use is a 5" Eachine monitor. When I make it towards the end of the football field, the signal is terrible and basically lost. I will eventually buy goggles; but, right now, I want to get the Tinyhawk how I like it (and a new VTX is cheaper than goggles).

Would ya'll recommend installing a new VTX? If so, which one? Or, are there modifications I can do to the stock VTX?
Or, am I being misled because the Eachine monitor (with stock antennas) has poor reception? That is, should I leave the stock VTX alone and replace the Eachine monitor's antennas and/or wait until I buy a decent pair of goggles?

Thanks!

I installed the SLED adapter with a crossfire and unity VTX on my TH Freestyle
https://tinysleds.com/products/emax-tiny...tx-rx-sled
(there's a video on how to install it)

It does work very well but don't expect miracles...it's not going to be like some digital signal. However, my range is significantly improved for both RX and TX. I still get a grainy video when there are trees in the way but it doesn't drop out completely the way it did with the original VTX. I've also added a little lollipop antenna which helps. Anyway, it's a bit pricey when you do these upgrades. Once you add in the crossfire and unity, you can kinda justify a better quad that already has crossfire and a decent VTX. So, I guess it depends on how married you are to the TH.

Thanks! I appreciate the info. If I had to do it over again, I probably would have done what you did. I'd like to stick with the Tinyhawk for a while, I like the super small size and I can (and have) flown it right into my 4 year old's head without any ill effects.

I will probably leave the VTX alone. I did just run across this article about unlocking 200mW? https://www.kiwiquads.co.nz/how-to-unloc...ore-range/
Has anyone done this with success?

I get it. The TH2 is a nice little quad. It served me well as I started to learn. I destroyed my first one completely...the second is staying as an indoor toy while I use better quads outdoors.

As far as the VTX unlock, you just hold in the VTX button, plug in the battery, and unplug. That's it. (although kinda tricky as you need more hands).
Of course, you'll need to choose a channel that supports the higher power and change your goggles to that channel. I just use Raceband 1 as it seems to work in my yard.

Nice! Another thing to do to the Tinyhawk, and it's free!

I have the older tinyhawks(S-freestyle). The SP-I receiver isn’t that bad, I did a antenna mod (32.8mm) and would loose video before failsafe (approx 1200 feet) .. even with a new d-8 (emax, and 32.8mm antenna), the other toasted.. I STILL loose video before it will failsafe. I am gonna try another vtx. See how far it will go...
I know crossfire with aTBS 32 nano vtx will get u a mile out!

a unify nano pro32 can provide 400mw, you can get much more distance than a mile in theory. it will outperform an spi receiver.

I have yet to test the distance with the unify/crossfire combo as I just haven’t been in a place to do it. And I’m to chicken to fly out over the forest that surrounds out property

Ok.. today, first clear day, first battery progressing with acro.. and my first tune (I love this quad), upgrades camera Rx, and dvd vtx... I fed it some asphalt for lunch..and watched a car run it over..Yes, I did get footage..it may have only lost 2 motors...
The TH freestyle is awesome .
Oh, I upgraded the original rx with an antenna at 32.8mm (props off fpv) and get 1600 ft of reception .. the spi rx died and installed an external d-8 rx same antenna . With end 200mh vtx.. I loose video before I get any “low telemetry” warnings

You can't upload videos direct to the forum as attachments because they are huge media files and take up more storage capacity than the forum has available. You need to upload them to your favourite video hosting site (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo, Google Photos, Imgur etc.) and then post a link back here.

That was just pure bad luck. Of all the places in that open area you could have crash landed and it was on the road, just before the only car around decided to drive in that direction.
