The Satisfaction of this Hobby
#1
I just finally got one of my quads up and running. It is a fettec/kiss quad and I had to research/learn/trial-and-error my way for days before I finally got it flying correctly. But goddamn, when you crack the code and fix one of these things, it's such a high. To struggle through the convoluted multi-level systems, to beat your head against a wall, to read and watch and review in an effort to get a quad running, and then finally to unlock the magic of flight....that is a wild ride.
I love flying, it is quite indescribable. But I am learning to love the troubleshooting and tech side of this hobby too, and that feels kind of weird.

I feel like I cheated on my path into this hobby and have lucked out a lot with very few bad or broken components. Working in electronic repair in the late 90s had me more than qualified for the soldering side of things but it also helped in troubleshooting aspects as well. Doesn't hurt that my main job is in low voltage contracting mostly dealing with RF so I really only had to focus on the actual flying and the software side of FPV. Choosing DJI 2 years ago when the goggles were on backorder for about a month I think helped force me into learning things before I inevitably encountered them thanks to places like this and JB.

I very much understand the satisfaction of troubleshooting and repairing things through my day job though. I run a small two man team doing low voltage type work that has zero guaranteed income flowing in. All of our invoicing comes from installs and service related work so the satisfaction is highly coupled with compensation when a call or job is completed.

Yeah, it is damn rewarding once you push past the frustration. Smile
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Having spare quads is a must in my book. It makes a crash, frustrating problem solving, and waiting for parts so much easier knowing you have other quads to fly.
Knowing I've got a good selection on the wall ready to fly makes struggling to fix one or two of them much more tolerable/enjoyable.

I could not agree more.

Sometimes you also get tired of one size (micros) and want to work on something that doesn't make you go blind.
