Soft crash into grass and quad "dies"
#1
I went up 5 feet and it just fell out of the air plopping on the turf lol

Very weird and random but ok..So I try to fly again and nothing..figure maybe my battery is dead so i try another and notice I can't arm anymore...odd

Can't figure it out forever so I hook it up to betaflight only to realize all my settings are erased and gone!
No modes and my rates are all reset.

After spending another 20 min resetting the quad up to arm and flightmodes n stuff I'm back flying again..

This time found the "backup" button to save all my settings just in case

Has this ever happened to you?

That's very odd. All the settings are stored in NVRAM of the MCU so the settings shouldn't have just got wiped. It's almost like something caused the MCU to do an NVRAM reset. Never heard of that happening before.

Be aware that the "Backup" button in the GUI doesn't save ALL the settings. Only the ones in the GUI. There are many more settings you don't see in the GUI. The only way to backup ALL the settings is to run the "diff all" command in the CLI and save the output to a text file. When you want to restore the settings you then just copy/paste all the text from the saved file back into the CLI.

I'll definitely save to a text file for extra protection just in case, thanks snow!

It was really odd because it was my first flight of the day and I didn't really even get much liftoff before it just dropped.

On the bright side it's all better now soooo...idk lol

Most likely caused by something shorting to your FC. I'd go over the quad with a fine tooth comb if I were you.
Flying: Talon 6S 6" 2407s 381g no bat, Martian 3, 5" 2205s sooo heavy + gopro session 5 573g AUW, Aurora 5" 2205s 280g no bat, Druckbaer 3" 1404s 172g AUW 3S 550, BQE Megapixel 2.5" 1107s 139g AUW 3S 550, BabyHawk R 2.5" 164g AUW 3S 550 (stock except microeagle, CRSF, 2.5" arms) and maybe 3 more, for now...

Used to happen all the time when my soldering skills sucked. Cold solders were almost always the culprit. Some ESC wire or something would get knocked loose. I'd freak out and bang the quad to fix it knocking the wire back in place seemingly fixing the problem.

was the grass damp by any chance? If you got lucky a water droplet in the right place could wipe the MCU RAM but that's so rare i'd be buying a lotto ticket, especially if it works fine afterwards....

We used to coat exposed electronics particularly the ESC pads with liquid electric tape for that reason. I notice no one does that so much and I haven't had problems so I stopped.

I coat everything on all of my quads with silicone modified conformal coating from MG Chemicals. Just peace of mind really but has saved me a few times.

backing up is useful, also if you buy a new FC then you can restore from a backup and go fly.
I have 2 similar setups so I can swap all parts across the 2 kwads.

Yes, this exact thing happen to me on a Diatone R349 after about 10 flights.  After re-connecting, BF showed that only the default settings remained. I re-flashed the FC and set up BF again.

Only happened once, but i still do not 100% trust it.
