Runcam 5 Orange
#1
I saw this pop up in my Runcam app a few days ago and meant to post something, then forgot. But it's on Runcam's site now too, so there are some more details available.

Besides the fact that it's, well, orange, it also has some extra resolutions and image stabilisation - something like Hypersmooth, hopefully. Also some of the new resolutions appear to have a 'SV' suffix, so maybe they've braved GoPro's lawyers and added their own Superview-esque features. It also looks like they may be releasing it at $100, which is the same price as the existing 5, and the 3S before it.

The original Runcam 5 is fantastic value for money and a genuinely great camera, so I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

The ground is for dead people.

My guess is that the "extra features" are just a firmware update that can also be applied to the current black version of the 5. The fact that they haven't called it the 5S seems to indicate that is probably the case with the only difference being the orange coloured casing. I certainly hope so because I only just bought a black 5 a few months ago and haven't managed to use it yet. I know the orange casing is better for finding an ejected camera but I still prefer a black case on the micro HD cameras.

Yes, this orange version of the RunCam 5 and the black version are both 38mm x 38mm x 36mm in dimension and as such they fit any GoPro Session 5 TPU mount Smile

Nice. I just received my black runcam 5, hope all those features are available with firmware at some point.
BTW, any sd card recommendations out there? I know it supports up to 128GB but Oscar mentions in the review some issues so maybe better to have 64GB units?

Keep in mind that your flights are going to be less than 10 minutes each (unless you're doing long range) so it would be better to use a number of smaller capacity cards (32GB or 16GB) rather then one large capacity card and swap cards over every few flights. That way, if you lose your quad or HD camera on any of the flights, you haven't then lost ALL of your footage from that flying session. The same thing applies if you have any data corruption issues - you will only lose the data on one card from some of your flights and not everything.

I don't yet know the sort of file sizes the RunCam 5 produces but to give you a bit of perspective, on my Firefly 2 set at 1080p, footage for each 5 minute flight produces a MOV file that are each around 2GB in size.

Thank you Snow, makes sense to go with smaller cards and experiment file sizes. It is a flexible model for quads and other aircrafts (fpv plane), I can always switch cards

That's dumb.... I'm out then. I'm looking for something like this, but with at least water resistance.

That sounds really high. With my RC5 I shoot in 1920x1440, 60fps and high quality, and I get file sizes under 1.5GB for a 4-5 minute flight, IIRC.

On most of the cameras the presence of a memory card slot and/or USB connector make them non resistant to being submerged in water. The RunCam 5 has a rubber case but the memory card door is just a sliding door without a proper seal and there are holes in the back for ventilation / heat dissipation. At best the camera will only be splash resistant but I wouldn't try submerging it or sticking it under a shower head.

Some of my flights do run to almost 6 minutes if I'm careful and sometimes I only remember to turn off the camera after I've changed the LiPo Whistling so maybe that is where the extra data is coming from. I just looked through a few of my latest flight footage folders and see that most files are around about the 2GB mark. That's running 60fps on the 1080p setting.
