roninUAV Sohei Mk1
#1
Behold ... the warrior monk Big Grin

The "Sohei" is going to be my 3" basher frame with a beefy 3mm bottom plate, 2mm top plate, and 3.5mm cam cage.

I opted for a unibody to save weight and allow for a thicker bottom plate.  At only 3 inches, that should allow this thing to be a sub250 pocket rocket that can take a serious beating ... at least that's the goal.   ROFL

I'm a lot more excited for this than I expected. I guess it's cos I always really liked flying my 3 inch Gecko and Acrobrat. I must've built at least 3 versions of each over the years. Kinda salivating over what I like to call "proof of life" pics my supplier sends me just before fedexing the stuffs ...

Finally got around to this build.  Some of my funnest flying have been with my Gecko and Acrobrat 3 inchers so I was really looking forward to this guy.  Since I'm losing an inch in prop size, I figured I could go beefier on the frame and make this our bando basher.

3mm unibody bottom plate ...

By now those of you that follow my builds know I'm a huge fan of the Flywoo Goku GN745 AIO FCs.  Did I mention they absolutey suck and you should not buy them?   ROFL

I was never a big fan of the Xing motors and found them to be annoyingly notchy.  But I couldn't resist these ones purely for the bling factor.  Still notchy.

I've got a Caddx Turtle whoop split cam in this one ...

To add to its beefy-ness, I went with extra beefy 3.5mm cam plates (1mm inner cam plate).  Oddly, I'm looking forward to crashing this.

Crossfire as usual and still sticking to these FPVCycle Minimortal T antennas although I really have not been too happy with its performance.

And again going with the HGLRC Zeus Nano.  This little thing just works and works well.

I really like these Axii shorty's too.  Same with TrueRC shorty's.

All wired up and ready to rip ...

AUW 229g with a Tattu 850mAh 4S ...

Tuning this guy tomorrow morning and really looking forward to bashing it around a bit.   Thumbs Up

So I'm actually kinda impressed with these Xing "v2" motors. I've been tuning a lot of these 4S sub250 builds lately and these motors have ran cooler than even the almighty T-Motors. I do wish I had some more aggressive props. I've always found these Windancers to be a bit too slidey. Need more bite. I'm tempted to throw 1408's on this thing with ducted props for their crazy bite. But I'll rock this setup for a bit and see how it goes.

Tuning went without incident and really stoked by how nimble this thing is. Just wish it wasn't so slidey.

Any plans to make this frame available soon? I’ve been eyeing your frames for a build and this one looks perfect for me size-wise.
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Thanks for the interest man. Admittedly, I've been dropping the ball on this one since I am all giddy about the Sohei (new proper kv motors coming for it tomorrow lol). It likely won't be for a month or so. This is still prototype 1. Stay tuned though ...

Since this is meant to be the Mk1 line's basher frame, I needed to put it through the ringer.

So I took it to this place I'm now calling The Crucible.   ROFL

This used to be my fav spot back in the CC3D / Blackout Mini H days when "ripping" meant cruising around trees.  These days I'm bouncing off trees and this place is brutal.  The trees are close together so you're pulling off a blind trick and yawing out of it straight into a tree trunk lol.  And if that weren't enough, they are scraggly trees.  Those ones with those cursed branches that appear at the last minute.  They also have an uncanny ability to shapeshift mid flip so you are landing on more scraggle that used to not be there a millisecond ago.  I swear it - this place eats drones lol.   Cry

I am proud to report that the frame held up REALLY well.  The video is not one continuous take but it is mostly chronological showing just a few of the crashes.  I am particularly impressed by how the gyro seems to still like the frame even after so many hard crashes - you can tell by the solid raw video all throughout.  I'm aiming for the whole of the Mk2 line to have this kind of resilience to crashes.  Anyway, I would've continued flying but that last crash busted the FC - it wouldn't do the ESC beeps.  I did go nuts on turtle modes and throttling to get out of trees an awful lot.  I just hope the FC's not ruined they are not cheap lol.  Sad But the frame is good!   ROFL Thumbs Up

nice!

tried other props?
i used gemfan 3035x3 and emax avan 3024 on my 1404 backthan, both are very nice in performance, durability is bad. i would suggest to give the emax avan a try, they get good torq out of tiny motors and might provide the agressive feel.

i believe the highest pitched 3inch props for t-mount are the rotorx 3044.

I wanted to see how the tune would hold up using the same set of props lol. I must have bent back 4 blades throughout the testing. Generally, my sense is the 3 inch class is bulletproof. Translating that to anything bigger gets exponentially tricky.

I am looking for some higher pitch props though. I wanna try the HQProp 3x3x3. They look pretty aggressive. Def wanna try those RotorX ones you posted. Hoping to find them in stock somewhere.
