I have wanted to jump on the FPV Wing hype for a while now. To be honest it’s sort of a childhood dream come true. Back in the late 80’s when I started with RC, I always wanted to take to the skies. But back then it was not as easy or as budget friendly to get into model aviation, especially as a kid. So I always dreamed of an RC airplane. Hence the reason I love flying quads. So I decided on RMRCs version of the Sonicmodel AR Wing. Same thing but with the addition of a stabilizing gyro, and some cool stickers Parts to complete the kit: Rx- FrSky X4R-SB Cam- Runcam Swift 2 VTx- Eachine TX526 I have the receiver installed and control surfaces all working correctly. Super easy to get setup with the gyro. Simply plug the sbus signal into ch1 on the gyro. So I made a pin connection to plug into the servo plug and bound the Rx. Everything is automatically mixed for you through the gyro. All I had to do was reverse ch2 Added some antenna tubes. Battery strap moved and CG should balance pretty well after cam and vtx are installed. A GoPro Session will be carried in the nose too. Might add an LC filter later if needed. Which leads me to my first question. Since the FPV system isn’t installed yet and she is technically ready to maiden, should I test and practice without the FPV system? Or just put it in, balance CG once and be done with it? Those are my thoughts. At least save a bash or two to the cam and antenna right? I do have high hopes as I grew up playing flying simulators and video games and even then never used much rudder, have always been the “yank-n-bank” type anyways. Launching “looks” fairly easy as the gyro even has takeoff mode in full stabilization. My first few landings is where I see myself doing the most damage. But we all know how those theories usually pan out. • Posts: 3,288 Threads: 129 Likes Received: 2,740 in 1,644 posts Likes Given: 2,969 Joined: Apr 2017 Reputation: 65 (23-Mar-2020, 02:30 PM)sloscotty Wrote: I think you should go ahead and practice and perfect your launch techniques before you install camera etc. You *will* crash... You are encouraging me to drag the S800 off the wall. I just took an antenna tube that came with one of my quad frames. I cut it in half at a angle making two hypodermic needle straws basically. I just pierced them through the foam right above the servo wire channels. Then gave them a small dab of hot glue to help keep them secured. Hardest part was getting the antennas inside the tubes with my big fingers. I have been following your S800 thread. Send it girl! Trying to get out for a maiden will be the hard part with the COVID19 craziness. I usually have the kids on my hip but I wont take them out right now. I will probably go solo or maybe take my fly buddy to an empty bean field. Lucky to have so much open farm land here. But who knows when I’ll get the chance without kiddos. ABSOLUTELY TRY IT!!!! FPV is just a cool project from what I've seen from wing pilots.... Unless you're going for long range then then line of sight is the way to go on a wing! Take that self stabilizer off and let's see some barrel rolls!!! lol ;P I wanna try flying a wing so badly but I don't live anywhere where there are huge wide open fields required for them :< And dude, so far in america the carona virus ha 0.01 death rate with around 82k being infected in america. Only less than 1300 ppl have died if I remember correctly. The common flu has killed 30k+ people this year alone. This carona virus thing has been blown so far out of proportion it's crazy. It's got the same death rate as the common flu so far in the US (well actually it's a little more deadly than the flu but not by much.. it's by like 0.007%, but also we have a vaccine for the flu as well).... Sure you want to be more careful than usual right? Mostly because it seems to be more infectious than the flu, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't live your life man, especially if ur just going to an open field with ur kids lol. I know you can't just be flippant about it, and I wash my hands and don't touch anything when I go out, but really I just think of it as having 2 separate Flu's now, because that's what the statistics show. The death rate seems to be higher in other countries, but in america so far the death rate is 0.01% which is the exact death rate of the common flu. Bet you never thought of the flu as being so serious ;D Sure we have a vaccine for the flu..... but when was the last time you got YOUR flu shot? And the flu shot is 40% effective as it is and STILL 30k this year alone havve died from it. Go fly your fricken wing man. Bring some peroxide. Edit: the death toll form the flu is actually esimated anywhere from 29k to 59k. Only 1300 from COVID19. The flu is actually fairly less deadly than COVID but MUCH more common.. but there is no reason what-so-ever you should be scared to go alone with your kids to an open field 'Ignore' is the route word of Ignorant. • Posts: 3,288 Threads: 129 Likes Received: 2,740 in 1,644 posts Likes Given: 2,969 Joined: Apr 2017 Reputation: 65 SoCal Kaity :D OMG, no one told me it would be this much fun! FWIW, all the cool guys fly wings without an FC.....once they shed the FC they rave about how much better the wing flies. Just food for thought. Given how inherently unstable the wing is, I think I would want a FC. On a plane, maybe no FC, but a wing, it seems best. I haven't gone the wing route yet, but likely will someday though. Too big of a financial investment for me right now, particularly with the unknown FAA issue. Going fixed wing means huge upgrades in the control and video electronics. But any long ranger worth his/her salt goes wings. It's the only way to truly claim to be a LR pilot. I will be watching both you aces....Kaity and Steve! You two can show us all how it's done! So I figured this would get me started as well as my daughter who has more of an interest in fixed wings than quads. Also the Gyro stabilizer has three modes. Launch control/ full stabilize - which is equivalent to level mode 3D stabilized - which is acro basically but with added smoothing. And 3D mode - which is full manual control no assistance And its all mapped automatically to ch5 even and put on a 3 pos switch in the tx Posts: 2,410 Threads: 136 Likes Received: 1,790 in 1,052 posts Likes Given: 3,302 Joined: Jan 2017 Reputation: 50 31-Mar-2020, 07:33 PM (This post was last modified: 31-Mar-2020, 07:34 PM by Drone0fPrey.) Well while performing a couple more checks I had a weird hiccup with my Rx and the X4R lost connection to the Tx. Solid red LED and slow blinking green. As I went to touch the Rx it suddenly reacquired rssi on the transmitter. Weird. I was using some old beat up antennas that I had already previously repaired the active element. So thinking maybe new antennas would help. Added brand new antennas and went to power up. Now Rx says it is not bound? So I re-bind and everything seems perfectly fine. Tried to force it again by moving Tx super close, flipping Rx all around and the wing but it was working perfectly. So I powered down and fiddled the antennas back into the tubes I installed and secured the Rx back onto its velcro. As I went to double check again, it worked great for just a few minutes while I was playing with my Tx switch sound effects and randomly lost all connection to the Tx again. This time receiver went dark for a couple seconds and came back on with a solid red led again. Same thing, no communication. So I wiggle the antennas where they attach to the Rx and regained connection. Let go more weird lights and back to nothing. I have used and abused this receiver for a few years now and I think she just died. No matter what I try now I can not get it to re-bind or do anything but light up a solid red led and blink the green one slowly • Posts: 2,410 Threads: 136 Likes Received: 1,790 in 1,052 posts Likes Given: 3,302 Joined: Jan 2017 Reputation: 50 Got to maiden the wing yesterday! 3 flights on 2 batteries. No crashes, bad launches, or rough landings! Here is my wife filming a complete noobs very first wing launch and flight.
