Rebel Ruxus "free range" - 7inch freestyle build
#1
I've been eyeing off this frame for a while and finally pulled the trigger on the purchase.

http://rebelminiquads.com/free-range-ruxus-customizer/

Here's where I ended up....

And now onto the build Popcorn

SPECS:
  • Rebel Ruxus free range 7 inch frame
  • BrotherHobby Avenger V3 2306.5 2000Kv motors
  • ZeeZ F7 FC and 60A 4in1 BLHeli32 ESC
  • Crossfire Nano RX with immortal-T antenna, vertically polarized mount.
  • Crossfire Unify Nano VTX with TrueRC OCP U.FL antenna.
I've attempted 7" freestyle twice before, a cheap slamnasty like clone frame and a XL7 iflight copy - both from BG.   In the end the frames (ahem, piloting...) didn't last long after a crash or two so I shelved the idea for a while.

The Ruxus is a strong frame, the arms are 10mm thick, it's crazy.
The frame came in a nice box for once and the parts are all top notch carbon.   The TPU prints are epic.    Thank you American manufacturing Thumbs Up .

Look at these arms, the 10mm is pure balls.   An armattan rooster 5 inch arm is in front for comparison.   At only three motor mount holes I'm thinking I need to purchase some locktite finally.

The centre plate where the stack is mounted (both 20mm and 30mm stacks OK) is minimal and takes advantage of a double stack arrangement that holds the arms in place.   The two gear shaped inserts milled out of the carbon fibre in the picture below hold nuts in place that in turn hold two bolts to keep the arms locked in position.  Needless to say getting it all together was a bit tricky.  In my wisdom I decided to wire up the arms first and solder the ESC.  Doing that first made it tricky to mount it all together AND tighten these two darn bolts...

Sometimes if the heatshrink will fit, I like to pre-build the arms and get all the components in place.  In this case the FC I'm using for this build supports 4 RGB LED strips so I've put an RGB led strip in in arm.

After a fair bit of fussing about I got it all together and mounted the arms to the main plates.  I also soldered up the motor wires to the 4in1 esc and mounted the esc as well.   Starting to look pretty sweet!

This is where I really like the ZeeZ setup, there are locations on this FC to direct solder (via a pin header) a crossfire nano RX and unify nano VTX.   It was pretty straight forward to do and ends up looking very neat.  I placed some double sided foam tape under the RX and VTX to keep it off the FC.  There is no flex in the solder joins but it helps against any shorts or stresses.

The FC went on in a pretty straight forward and unimaginative manner, big builds make me lazy, lol..

Time to do a quick check and power it all up.  Here I am testing the RGB LEDS, VTX, RX, etc...  The little USB fan is great to have handy.   I've got the LEDs in the knight rider scanning mode for now, it's cool, lol...  Why the hell not I reakon.

More to come..

Your builds are always so pro-level clean man!! Nothing like that sweet sound of bi-blades.

Badass! Beautiful build man. I love the LED's. Those arms are crazy thick man. You should be able to survive some heavy crashes with that one man. Great job!

Thanks guys! You know when you find a frame that you can settle on. For me that has been the rooster, I've clocked the most hours in the air on that frame. Now I feel that this will be the next long term frame in the fleet...

On with the build log... Big Grin

The battery is a bottom mount affair.  The stock strap isn't long enough to comfortably hold a 6S pack.  I decided to use a spare GEPRC strap that I feel is a lot tougher.

Now with the battery strap in under the flight stack, I can bring it all together and fix the stack in place, mount the camera and front camera TPU mount.   This is where it starts to get a bit squeezy around those frame posts.  The motor wires and RGB LED wires don't have much room.  In fact I think I will re-route them when I do a revision on this build - jeez already thinking of revisions let alone finishing the build first!   Just so darn tidy!

The RX and VTX antennas are next up.  They are mounted on what is possibly the coolest TPU RX/VTX antenna mount I've ever seen.  I allows the crossfire immortal-T antenna to achieve a vertical orientation for superior range.   It is close to the frame but it is not up against the CF like it is when you mount it on an arm, which is quite common I've noticed.
The VTX antenna sits WELL @#$%^ CLEAR of the frame, on this quad's maiden I was getting some serious PBs for video quality.  This TPU mount rocks.

Putting it all together as pieces at this point was a piece of cake.  The TPU mounts are really thought out.  They work and give the quad a unique look I reakon.   You can see in the pic below that the minimum camera angle is pretty aggressive.  I might remove some of the TPU from underneath the cam to be able to lower the FPV angle.   This is the only real critique I can give this frame.

Here's a couple of shots of it assembled.

I've got a gopro session holder printing on the prusa 3d printer at the moment.  Once I get it all sorted I will post some video.

Cheers,

ph2t.

That's a great build log and a fantastic looking quad. I'm eager to see some flight video!

Again, yet another pro quality build.  You should really consider offering up your build skills for a fee.  That is OEM dude.

P.S.  I may steal you Immortal T mount idea kai thanx bai.   Big Grin

Hey guys, I know I haven’t updated this thread for a while. I’ve put a few packs through this quad now and am currently tuning it. I am finding the biblades a challenge to tune but I’m getting there. I reason once I put some tri blades at a lower pitch on this the tune will be even better. Just wtf is it with biblades and tuning??

I’ve settled on a 70% throttle trim to stop everything draining the batts to such a low voltage that BF reboots mid flight. This was on extended punch outs for 3-4 plus seconds. At 70% trim it still kanes.

I’m going out in the morning with the GoPro to get some sweet footage to share, wish me luck! Seriously wish me @&$@“ luck. Lol....

OK, so I got some packs through it and it needs a tune, bigtime. Here's a video showing the wobbles.

Any tips guys? I think I need to turn up the P and D values and look at the I-term maybe? There seems to be a fair bit of wobbles.

The HD cam (session 4) and the FPV feed both show the wobbles so It's not the HD cam mount, I don't think so anyways.

cheers,
ph2t.

Great looking build man, have fun flying it! I love the rebel frames, so looks so different from the rest and have a really nice aesthetic. I've been eyeing the Yeti for a while but I can't justify the 160 euros it costs for me.

I had very similar vibrations on my 6-inch and I've still never really fixed them. I've replaced every component except the frame, RX, VTX and cam. I had better luck with bi-blade props, 24kHz PWM, low I-term relax, high Ps and low Ds, but it's still not where I want it to be.

The ground is for dead people.
