Prop questions
#1
I am using the avan schimitar props on my 3.5” build and I like they way they fly but don’t like that they are not very crash resistant. They have a funny shape and it only takes one crash and they are bent or disfigured in someway and it’s difficult bending them back. That and I kind of want to go a little less aggressive on the pitch. The T3.5X2.5X3 seems like the only t mount option that’s just about right but looks like it only comes in gray. Am I missing some prop options?

Also on my 5” I only have about 6 packs on it so still learning the feel. I am running the 5043 props just because I read many suggestions that it was a really good all around prop. I am running 6s 1700kv motors. AUW is 780-800 grams depending on the battery I use. It was suggested that a lower pitch might be better suited for that kv and 6s. I was looking at the S4 or S5 props and was curious what you all use as all around props for your heavy 5” quads? I’m just looking for a semi scientific baseline. Lol.

For 3.5”:

Gemfan 3525-3 are an option. They have a design that allows for both t-mount or m5 prop mounting:

Haven’t tried the Gemfans above. On my RoninUAV 3.5” Sohei, when I’m not running scimitars on it I use the HQ T3.5x2.5x3, and I like them. The HQ’s are significantly more durable than the scimitars, but they just don’t look as cool.

If you pick up the Gemfans, please let me know your thoughts on them.

I second the HQ T3.5x2.5x3 for 3.5". Recursion has some good testing data:

I will probably orders some HQ T3.5x2.5x3 props. The video results are pretty impressive. I saw the Gemfan's but ruled them out since after using the adapter they are 3 grams each.

Gemfan have 3520 as well as 3525 versions of the prop, and come in a lot more colors than the other two brands. The clear colors are a little stiffer and the solid colors a little softer. The size/shape kind of falls in between the HQ and Avans, and I think grip/thrust as well. I've tried the 3520s and they are pretty durable and the tips can take more abuse than the Avans and seem to give less jello/vibration too. The mount adapter though I think is a big weakness, have had several (not often but more than once) break at the hub. They are probably the lowest cost option seems they are marked down a lot, maybe because 3525 are the newer version.

Chris Rosser also did some bench testing if you like numbers

On 5" I tend to favor durability over other factors. The HQ Ethix PB&J were very durable as are the various Gemfan Hurricane. I've been on the 51433 3.5" pitch for a while now and ended up with a bunch from the Cyclone FPV sale.

On 3.5" I've run the Gemfan 352X and they are nearly indestructible compared to the havoc a 5" motor can do.

I have those 3.5 props, along with the other pitches (4,5, and I think 6 - I'd have to look).

I prefer the less aggressive pitch at the moment, and they fly nice sans damage. As soon as that blade hits something, the noise increase is quite noticeable. I wish I could fit some 4 inchers on the craft, as I only have one 3.5 quad and buying replacements for one is a bit annoying. I don't fly it as much as I used to, and it being Diatone has more to do with it than the props.

Sorry, didn't notice you said T mount. Those I mentioned are available in both I believe. Don't quote me though as my T mount motors are 3 inchers.

I just got som Gemfan 3525 props in today. I’m not a big fan of the mount adapter but damn these props are where it’s at! I love them! They were almost too quiet but still snappy. Best part, I crashed and turned one blade into an accordion. Lol. Bent it back and was back in the air.

With 4” GF Hurricane 4023, I’ve found that I need to use m2*8mm bolts to hold the props on instead of the usual m2*7mm I use on t-mounts, or they don’t grip the threads enough to hold on in a hard crash. Are the 3.5” GF’s with the adapter for m5 or t-mount the same way?

Hmm, yeah, actually. I didn’t notice till you said something. There is not a lot of bite left in the threads. I could definitely see these popping off in a bad crash.

I think gemfan uses the same adapter across their props. They also have a 2mm? version in grey for their larger shafted motors. I have not had these props come off, except when they break at the hub and then usually the adaptor is still on. But sometimes I just fish screws out of the tray so not sure if I am using 7 or 8mm.

I am a bit anal when it comes to prop screws and make sure they are all the same size so I don’t have balance issues. Probably doesn’t matter but that’s me lol. But I was using 7mm screws, I measured. They held onto the bell but not by very much. 8mm screws give a lot more bite but I’m one short now lol

I have had 2 4” hurricane props pop off in a hard crash with 7mm. Thankfully, didn’t strip the t-mount holes- that would have pissed me off because the motors they were mounted on only have 2 screw holes, instead of the usual 4.
