Parallel Storage Charging

After my shortened flight yesterday I had several fully charged batteries to storage charge. My thought is that as long as they are very close to the same voltage that it would be okay to parallel storage charge them. Am I correct? This would cut down on time by a lot if it works the same way as parallel charging.

I found conflicting information on the internet. Go figure....

I didn't try it, I went the solo route. Too chicken, hehe.

I always charge to storage individually. Mainly because I can't make any promises about the voltage levels, and can't be damned to do the maths.

But mainly because it's quicker anyway. It normally takes me about 5 minutes to get a battery to storage at 1C, and even across 8 packs that's less time than an episode of whatever I'm currently watching on Prime/Netflix/whatever.

The recommended guidelines. As long a per cell they are within 0.1V. Example 4S, 0.4V total difference. Or 6S, 0.6V differences.

For me, I try to keep them 0.1V total regardless. What I do, check all the packs. Bundle them into groups. Charge the lower group to the voltage of the next group (usually takes less than a minute). Plug in the next group and so on. Then charge to storage or to full charge, whichever your purpose for those lipos will be used for.

I always land at a voltage such that after some rest time will bump to storage voltage. It's nice because I can get home and just store lipos right away. Also I think is better to the lipos in the long run. The downside is that you must have and carry more batteries to the field.

Parallel charging is the same for full or storage voltage, but like voodoo said be carefull with different battery voltages because the rush of current from one to another can get you into trouble. Also, always check the voltage cell by cell. If you have a really unbalanced lipo the main voltage can be similar to a balanced one but independent cells will not have the same voltage.

Parallel charging is very nice, it gets the job done really fast for someone in a hurry and it's not detrimental to the batteries. If you want to be in the safe side get a parallel charging board with poly fuses that will stop overcurrent between batteries.

Maybe you guys did t see the part where the batteries are all FULL. So the voltages would be almost identical. I've been parallel charging since I started flying/crashing, so I get the idea. This was a specific parallel storage charging question about fully charged batteries. Hehe.

Same principle applies when you parallel discharge them to storage from full voltage.

I have not had any issues doing as you describe.  If you have a bunch of fully charged batteries and you want to drain them to storage voltage, I see no issue with doing that in parallel.  I have done that quite a few times if I go out, break something on the first battery and then get home and parallel storage "charge" all my unused full batteries.  It can take a long time but it works for me.

Never storage charged LiPos in parallel but it crossed my mind a couple of times.
I don't think it's too safe out of the simple fact that the risk of having two or more batteries with a voltage difference bigger than recommended.
I'd rather spend time storage charging to a safe level and them charging them in parallel. However it doens't mean that I will never do it but i'll be sure to keep an eye on them.

There is no difference charging to storage or full voltage using parallel charging. You have to follow the same safety precautions.

I parallel storage charge pretty much all the time. I just follow the same rules as when charging to full: check each battery with a cell tester that shows individual cell voltages, split into groups where the voltage difference is at most 0.1V. Then right before plugging into parallel board check the voltages again to make double sure that I’m not making a fiery mistake. Then I just put the charger in storage charge mode and it works just fine.

Okay. So I can charge up to four batteries on my parallel charger (per channel on my charger, which I have four) in the time it takes to charge one.

That time frame is definitely not the same for storage charging. I discharged one by itself and it was around 40 minutes or so from full charge to storage. The four on the parallel charger I stopped when it was over an hour and had more to go. I can't remember exact voltage....

So parallel charging works for me, but I'll stick to individual batteries when it comes to full batteries that need to be storage charged.

Parallel charging is different from parallel discharging. It is definitely will take long to discharge. A charger cannot discharge as quickly, so parallel discharge is not quicker unless you have something that a drain the lipos quicker. There are specific tool for this purpose.
