overkill ESC
#1
Hello Big Grin I'm planning to build my second drone and this time I decided to use 4in1 ESC instead of 4 separate ESC. I'm considering "65A BL_32 Tekko32F3 Metal 4in1" can you tell me is that overkill for 4S setup? or some spare Amps are always welcome for ESC? Besides that, can anybody tell me is there any other disadvantage to 4in1 ESC besides the risk of replacing whole ESC if something happened?

this is the Stack which I'm interested in:

One thing to be aware of with the Holybro Tekko32F3 Metal 4in1 ESC is that it has a completely dumb design in that the rings of the mounting holes are electrically connected to the respective motor pad that is closest to it. I have no idea why they did this because it is asking for trouble, especially for people who like to use metal screws or stand-offs.

that is good to know, but can you tell a little bit more about the overkill part? xD or can you suggest alternative to Tekko32F3 Metal?

There is no such thing as overkill. If you've got the money, just get the best you can afford Smile

The Tekko32 are quite thick. Make sure you have the headroom on your build for the stack.

The other disadvantage to 4in1 is, when your ESC lights up in fire, it usually takes any component above it too. You end up not only replacing the 4in1 but the FC too.

Also if you have different pin connectors on the FC and 4in1, it is not just plug and play. But that will not apply to you.

What are the situations when 4in1 ESC would burst into the flames? Some bad wiring? Crash?

Crashes, overloading with current (likely not with 65A), bad manufacturing, some kind of short circuit, incorrect wiring, and idiopathic. Basically like any other electrical component.

I have a bunch of the single esc variant of this 4in1, the Tekko32 Metal 65A. I had 2 of them catch fire when I flashed them, taking the motors with them lol. So flashing errors can cause fire too...

Now I don’t know what to do Smile The frame which I will use in the new build is iFlight XL5 V4. What esc type you prefer? 4in1 or 4 single esc?

That is pretty much personal preference. With individual esc's you either need a PDB or a AIO FC so that you can solder the esc's to the fc or PDB. With a 4in1 it's usually just a connector between the esc and fc (mixing 4in1's with different brand fc's can be done but they usually offer a fc that will work nicely with the esc). When you bust one esc on a 4in1 you usually have to replace the whole thing ($$$) or do some workarounds with a induvidual esc (not recommended from personal experience. It works but it's not ideal.)

4in1 will give you a cleaner looking build and depending on the frame single esc's might not fit very nice on the arms, they could have overhang for example which makes them more vulnerable.

I prefer single esc's on the arms for maintenance and $$$ purposes. I've had bad luck with 4in1's but a lot of people swear by them. The Hobbywing 60a 4in1 (either 20x20 or 30x30) seems to be rather popular with some of the best pilots in the business. http://www.hobbywing.com/goods.php?id=653&filter_attr=

If i were to do a premium build now, I'd go with either single holybro tekko or T-motor esc's paired with a kakute or t-motor fc or go for a full hobbywing stack (esc and fc).

For me the best esc i've ever used is the T-motor 35a esc http://store-en.tmotor.com/goods.php?id=586 (4S build)
for 6S i'd recommend the 45a http://store-en.tmotor.com/goods.php?id=737

They also have a really nice 4in1 55a http://store-en.tmotor.com/goods.php?id=915

I recommend purchasing a esc/fc "Stack" that comes together, they have the harness to connect them together already made, and you can just hook up, cam/vtx/rx and solder your batt leads and motor wires and you're done. Super clean, neat and tidy. And if you're not the best at soldering you don't have to struggle with all the extra ESC power and signal wires.

I can build a quad with a 4in1 in about half the time... For instance the tekk32 esc's come without the wires pre-soldered, so assuming:

VTX 4 Solder Joints
RX 3 Solder Joints
Cam 3 Solder Joints
Motors 12 Solder Joints
Batt Lead 2 Solder Joints
Individual esc (x1) 8 solder Joints (x4) 32 Solder Joints.

So For Individual ESC's you have 56 Solder Joints for a full build assuming you're using a FC with a good inbuilt PDB, and for a 4in1 you have 24 solder joints if you get a "stack".... I say go 4in1 since there isnt so much reliability or price differences these days.
