Open HD digital fpv.

Hello,

From what I understand the bottlenecks/latency is because of the Pi's limited processing/encoding/decoding power and the use of weak wifi adapters.

To overcome these limits... There are even pi zero sized SBC like the Banana Pi Zero that is very capable of handling the work.
Just hope someone with the skills can port Open HD to run on it.

Not to mention, using an UVC camera which does the encoding before sending the data to the SBC, it can drastically improve the whole process.

With the wifi adapters, there are sticks using the compatible chips but also include higher power transmitters 1 or 2 Watts.

With these combinations, wouldn't improvements be possible?

It would have been done if it was easy or everything thats available would be suited...

The main problem is the Pi. Other components are easy and available. It seems they're working on supporting different boards.

There was a video with an interview with someone involved in the development of this stuff.
In short he said: there is no way to do low latency hd without custom silicone (at least $100.000 upfront cost) in the needed power, size and weight envelope.

Of course this might change but thats the current situation

The interview that jasc is referring to is one with the founder and creator of fpv.blue and is linked to in the post below. It's well worth a watch if you've not already seen it...

To do what DJI did.. not "difficult".
HD broadcast since.. 2007?
Very good low latency video for teleconferencing.

Seems simple, right? - You dont need to invent anything. But.. it does cost $$$. A lot. And not just the plastic mould.. or the electronics. Distribution. Support. Marketing.

nVidia and AMD make negligible money from high end 3080/6800 because its low volume. They have tons of revenue. In contrast, DJI doesnt have thr high volumr/revenue. For DJI FPV, you are asking a big $$$ from each consumer.

---------EDIT-------
Think of this way. After spending $$millions on R&D, and manufacturing.
How many DJI FPV units does DJI need to sell to cover costs? 20,000? 150,000?
Its a lot of risk and takes a lot of $$$ to do this.

Why can't we just trap an iPhone 12 onto a quad like Johnny FPV and call it a day Smile

Although the technology exists, brining it down to a size that we can fly it on our quads and compress it within the 5.8Ghz bandwidth we have to share, along with processing power to encode/decode the video: this is the main challenge.
