New 'unconventional' build (AOS 3.5 frame)
#1
Took a bunch of random 'extras' I had lying around, and built this - Getting everything to fit was a challenge, hence the unconventional mounting for the Vista antenna - Can't wait to try it out in the morning!

AOS 3.5 frame | Toka 1408 2900kv motors | Caddx Vista | TBS Crossfire | Dalprop Cyclone T3018 props | Custom TPU mounts and guards | Holybro Kakute H7 Mini stack | 6s power

I love all that blue.
What’s your dry weight?

Nice!
I don’t know anything about digital- with that unconventional antenna mounting, are there any concerns about potentially being in the null zone of the antenna when you’re pitched forward flying towards yourself?

I'd like some video, with you flying in all directions to get a real world answer to the question Lemony poised.

When you decided to mount in a non-standard way, what were the design goals?
Was it just for experimentation?
Is there a problem you found which you hope to overcome?

I have some questions, but even if the answer is because you wondered what would happen, I don't see that as a negative. In fact there aren't really negatives when experimenting, just results that increase your knowledge and allow you to refine what you do next time. Smile

I only mounted the antenna that way due to placement of the Vista - I have the Vista mounted behind the camera, but only had a short cabled antenna, so had to think of an alternative way of mounting. I took a short test flight this morning until it started raining, and it seems with the antenna mounted where it is I seem to get better penetration, but lose video signal a bit sooner (Once it stops raining I'm taking it out again for full testing, and I will make sure I record the flight!).

It seems to me that the TPU guards are mounted incorrectly, they are usually mounted backwards to protect the carbon from below from impacts. It’s hard to see in the photo, they protect the carbon from all sides, and from the bottom too?

Does the AOS 3.5 O3 frame use M3 cone head screws for 20mm posts? I ordered this frame while it is running, I want to order titanium screws to reduce weight.

The guards run along the bottom as well.

When I ordered this frame I didn't know it was the O3 version LOL - I ordered the countersunk version, which has M2 countersunk heads.

Range / Penetration test of 'The Unicorn'

I was flying from inside my car due to cold, and the only area I had to fly in is a 2.4Ghz minefield (There's two wifi repeaters on a tower behind me, the school in front has several, and a couple of the houses across the street have some next-level wireless connection that completely kills my signal if I get within 20ft of the houses, even above them) - I'll have to do another test when it's warmer so I don't have to sit in the car, and will find a better area with less interference ...

Awesome! That unconventional antenna placement doesn’t appear to be an issue. Smile

Have had good success on DJI with the antenna laying on the arm of a few 5" quads. Regardless of the orientation the further I fly the less I feel comfortable pushing so I tend not to send it out too far. At least not far enough away that I can no longer hear it or there is massive delay in hearing the motors.

I'm tempted to rebuild my AOS 3.5 with an O3 air unit, I've really enjoyed it on an AOS5v2 build.
