Need some data and advice for medum range
#1
I'm thinking of putting together a medium/long range quad, about a 7".  I've thrown together a preliminary parts list after some research, not a lot so still fuzzy on some aspects like GPS, etc.  Any of you experienced long range guys see any problem with the list so far?  Any advice would eb appreciated.

Looks pretty good to me.  From what I've seen 7 inch is the best size for longer distance quads.  The GPS is perfect if you plan to use rescue mode in BF.  Not familiar with the FrSky 900mhz system.  But I have read comments by those who own them and are satisfied with the system. Have you settled on a battery size yet? How far is medium range to you? Given any thought to going to 2.4ghz or lower for your VTX? If you're going out more than 3-4 miles I would consider it. 5.8 will get the job done, but 2.4 will do it better. And it's not that much more money. But yeah....I'm no expert, but it looks good to me. Looking forward to the build.

I'm not too familar with it, either.  From what I read it does the job at a lower cost than Crossfire but doesn't have the maturity or features of it.  This is all new territory to me.

Not sure about battery but it will be 6s capable.  I need to do more research on mah/C rating vs weight and where the trade offs are.
About a mile is what I had in mind but 2 wouldn't be out of the question.  Not too interested in much further than that at this time but I never know how I'll feel about it in the future.
Actually, no.  Now that you mention it it would be worth looking into.  I was thinking of using an AKK F2 I have lying around with 800mw power but that might not be the right choice for this.

For only 2 miles, and since you have the VTX already, I would stick to 5.8.  If you decide to go out 4+ miles, I would definitely consider 2.4g.

I'm going back and forth on the components for this and the overall build plan. One thing I'm not so sure about is the kv I should use. I'm torn between 2 motors, one 1700kv and the other 1600kv. I'm going to be running 7" 3 blade props so I'm thinking the 1600, even though not much different, might be the better choice. Also going around on the ESC choice. I'm now kind of leaning toward the DYS Aria 35a. I've also decided to go with the Matek F405-CTR FC. And whether a larger 4s or smaller 6s would be better for flight time. Everything is 6s ready so I have lots of choices, maybe too many. I have the frame already so that's the only thing finalized at this point. Rotobuilds page is updated with changes.

Any and all opinions and advice is welcome. Smile
