Need help with Thrust in eCalc
#1
Ive been playing around with eCalc for a few days trying
to find a motor that suits a particular build but I'm confused
In one scenario it output the following.

Thrust-Weight  of which i got 2.9 and
Specific thrust of which I got 8.23

Will these figures get me a cinematic quad to fly?
If so... what can I roughly expect....
1. might lift off,
2. sluggish but ok,
3. average freestyle,
4. ready to race??

Is it Thrust-Weight or Specific thrust that has to exceed 5?
I got the figure 5 from one of Oscars articles...
I'm not sure I entered the data correctly... still battling. Cry
also what does add payload mean?
I get the impression its carrying capacity!!

On a side note, while searching for motors I noticed that maybe
70 to 80% of the motors are non-selectable....
I assume its because I'm using the free version?

Any help or advice would be most appreciative.
I HATE FRSKY!!!

It will probably be about a 2.1 on your scale. A 2:1 Thrust to Weight ratio is the minimum target for something that will fly and have enough power for stability, but it probably won't be capable of anything near what most FPV quads are built to do. Most freestyle quads have a minimum thrust to weight ratio of 5:1, and some even closer to 15:1.

Specific thrust is a measure of efficiency, ie how much thrust you produce per watt of electrical power.

The presets and recommendations in eCalc are geared more towards large payload carrying multirotors and not the freestyle quads most here are familiar with. Keep that in mind when interpreting the results.

And yes, the free version is quite limited. The full version is not that expensive and very worth it as a design tool. Let me know what parameters you're using and I can run it for you as an example before you purchase if you want.

Thrust/Weight looks something like this

Thrust/weight ratios

<1 Will not fly
>1/1.6 Very slow, might be dangerous to fly with wind.
1.6/2 Sluggish, but will fly.
2/4 Average, good for slow flight, good in wind.
4/7 Great, can be flow in acro/rate mode.
8/15 Race ready.
15+ Your Crazy Big Grin

But its entirety relative to what your trying to obtain:
Long range 2/4
Racing 8/15
Freestyle 5/12
Ect...

Well after getting frustrated at the limitations I decided to purchase it.. Smile
This will speed things up...
I should be able to select a motor within the month..
easily a month earlier than I would have without eCalc  Big Grin

Thanks again V-22  Thumbs Up
