My First 5" build
#1
I finally pulled the trigger on the goods for a 5" build.  My current fleet is a 1.6" Analog Odonata, a 2.5" GEPRC custom build, and a PiratFrames 3.5".  I was really debating on my next build between a Cinewhoop, a 7" long range, or a 5" freestyle quad.  After flying with some local guys they convinced me the 5" freestyle quad would probably make me happiest.  I pulled some spare parts, re purposed some others, and hit up pyrodrone for the rest.  Big thanks to a ton of you guys for helping me pick the parts for a semi budget build.  I ended up with the following.

TBS Source one V5 Frame
Emax ECOII 2207 1700kv motors
Diatone MAMBA MK4 F722 APP + F55
Walksnail GPS
Radiomaster ELRS RP1 receiver
Walksnail V2 32gb

I joined the Universal FPV Antenna Project discord and had a custom antenna mount STL made for my exact components, which was super cool! And printed the draft last night along with the initial build.  https://www.printables.com/en/model/4510...urable-fpv Its a free service but you can donate and plan to drop him some coffee money as it was well worth it so I didn't have to try and design something on my own in tinkercad.

I really need to invest in a better suited soldering iron.  To date I have been relying on my 20 year old 30watt Weller pencil tip.  It works well for doing circuit board components and the tiny whoop stuff but I really struggled getting decent joints with it on these much bigger pads and the XT60 plug and wires.  I ended up killing a fly with an elephant gun and used my Weller 260watt soldering gun for the job which made quick work of the joints.  They are not pretty due to the huge cumbersome tip but they are solid.  So far I have powered it up no issues with the smoke stopper and got all the music to my ears tones.  Tonight I need to solder on the receiver, VTX, GPS, design and RP1 reciever mount, and print XTC60 holder, skids, and GoPro mount. If all goes well my btteries should be in today. I ended up getting 3 1200mah speedy Pizza packs and one GNB 1300mAh 22.8V 6S HV to start me off.

Nice! That custom antenna holder is really cool.

For an affordable and dependable soldering station, I’m a big fan of the Yihua 939d+.
Out of the four soldering stations I own and regularly use, I think it was the cheapest- and it’s given me no problems, which can’t be said for my most expensive piece of crap…

I was actually looking at that one and seemed like it was a great bang for the buck. I have been going back and forth between a station and something like the pinecil or TS-100 portable. I like the portable and they seem effective but my gut tells me a station would be better and I honestly dont think I would be soldering much in the field anyway.

Your 3.5" builds look cool.
5" is great versatile. I cant remember last time I flew my 7", 10" or 15".

Thanks, I actually pulled it apart last night and did some weight savings changes. Managed to get it down from 284 AUW to 252g. I am trying to decide now if its worth the effort to swap FC's for another 6 gram reduction.

I have to admit I giggled like a little school girl when I first let it rip. It does sound pretty mean. Here is the gopro video from the maiden flight yesterday. Its dfinatley going to take some getting used too. Talk about power on demand!!

Nice!

I had my first proper 5” ripping experience a month or two ago with my 5” Stardust build. It really is a completely different experience than flying a 4” or smaller. Big Grin

That's a cool spot for a 5", with most of it surrounded by water it will be easier to keep track of people and dogs coming and going. When you've flown one of these, 250 grams is not a good compromise.

That looks really good for a first build, certainly better than my first Big Grin
