MOXON antenna
#1
hello all,

please see screenshots below of a Moxon antenna being sold online. i also included specs for the stock radiomaster boxer antenna for comparison. do these things work? what benefit do i expect out of this?
moving forward i would like to expect good LR performance once i have gps and rth done in my quad.

They're somewhat directional, but not extremely. That said, I easily get a ton of range out of mine, but everyone's definition of "long range" is different. Seeing as you're using a quad, my guess is that you'd have a hard time going out of range, assuming you maintain an unobstructed path between the TX and RX.

Revisiting this topic. I recently purchased a Radiomaster brand Moxon antenna for my Boxer Tx on a whim (and to get to a free shipping threshold). So now I’m debating whether to use it or the stock T antenna every time I fly. Maybe that’s not really necessary and I can just use the Moxon all the time? Or maybe I should only use the Moxon when flying out in front of myself? For a directional antenna there’s not much adjustment in positioning it.

I used to fly exclusively on a Moxon, and never really ran into issues. Sure, I'd get a micro-failsafe if I'd fly behind too much stuff, but that's as far as the reduction went. The only reason I'm not on one now is because my new module came with a dipole. I'll probably get a nicer Moxon later as the previous one was kinda cheap.

I have flown the stock Radiomaster T antenna and some Moxon antennas that came with other modules. I track my RQly and have an RQly- data field set on the telemetry screen on my transmitters. Honestly I really don't see any difference.

Then again I don't fly far even with my electric gliders. I flew them LOS and can only see so far before I lose orientation.

Hmmm, I have a TBS Moxon type antenna for my module that I also wonder when to use, LOL. I bet they are always the best choice because anytime I fly behind or around myself it is usually at close range.

I think for long range RC control like the TBS Crossfire and ExpressLRS the user cannot really tell the difference if the quad is close by. Those antennas may make a slight bit of difference when they are flying long range at the edge of good RF signal.
