19 They're somewhat directional, but not extremely. That said, I easily get a ton of range out of mine, but everyone's definition of "long range" is different. Seeing as you're using a quad, my guess is that you'd have a hard time going out of range, assuming you maintain an unobstructed path between the TX and RX.

4 Revisiting this topic. I recently purchased a Radiomaster brand Moxon antenna for my Boxer Tx on a whim (and to get to a free shipping threshold). So now I’m debating whether to use it or the stock T antenna every time I fly. Maybe that’s not really necessary and I can just use the Moxon all the time? Or maybe I should only use the Moxon when flying out in front of myself? For a directional antenna there’s not much adjustment in positioning it.

19 I used to fly exclusively on a Moxon, and never really ran into issues. Sure, I'd get a micro-failsafe if I'd fly behind too much stuff, but that's as far as the reduction went. The only reason I'm not on one now is because my new module came with a dipole. I'll probably get a nicer Moxon later as the previous one was kinda cheap.

4 Hmmm, I have a TBS Moxon type antenna for my module that I also wonder when to use, LOL. I bet they are always the best choice because anytime I fly behind or around myself it is usually at close range.
