Motors too hot
#1
Hi everyone,

I’m new here and new to FPV so please bear with me.

I recently ordered the QAV-Pro 2.5inch BNF from getfpv.com and I think my GoPro Hero 10 is just too much for it. After about 30 seconds of hover testing, I noticed the front motors are hot enough to melt your finger tips. You can smell them. This was tested without the GoPro battery with it weighing 118grams. The entire setup is 396grams. This build was tuned specifically for a naked GoPro and I’m wondering if it’s worth making some adjusts or just sending it back and getting a larger build. I don’t have time to custom build so I’m relying on advice from the community on what to get and everyone says something different. I’m looking for the best all around setup with a focus on indoor. I only have 1 Gopro and I’d rather not run a naked since I use GoPros for other things. Ideally I’d like to have the best of both worlds. I’m looking for something that I can get seamless indoor & outdoor one take shots while flying close proximity to people, walls and expensive things without getting easily sucked into anything. The smaller for me the better but I’d like at least 4 minutes of flight time. With a better tune on my motors does anyone think this is achievable? Being in angle mode causes it to drift backwards if that info helps any.

If not, what would you recommend would be the best all around? It seems some people prefer 2.5inch builds for indoor and 3.5 for outdoor. I just want a happy medium.

Specs:

Caddx Nebula Pro Vista
Lumenier ZIP v2 1404 cinematic motors - 4600kv
Beast F7 v2 55AIO
5 blade 2.5inch props

Well, for a start, forget the camera, what temp do the motors get to with no extra load? They should only just have the chill off. Any more than thet then you have to get that sorted before anything else is added. Filters are the first step to investigate excess temp.

Specs............. Battery??

Drift in Angle:-

1. Accellerometer calibrated properly?
2. Receiver screen in Betaflight, is little screen model stationary? centres set to 1500 with sub-trim?

there isnt an allaround settup, 2,5" and the weight of a fullsize gopro doesnt match.
for a fullsize gopro you need increased rotorsize (and motorsize) - it would work on a lower weight settup; on a naked gopro on your actual quad.

you need to focus your need Undecided

The motors aren’t hot until I add the GoPro. The tune feels perfect without it. Accelerometer is calibrated properly. Controller input checks out under receiver tab as well.

I’m running 850mah 4s Lumenier batts.

What should I do to trouble shoot this?

I’ve seen people rock this frame with the 2203 motors and get 4 mins flight time with a full GoPro without the battery. Will that easily fit or would I have to custom drill my frame?

2203 motors will fly much worse on 2,5". 2,5inch is the wrong size to carry the weight of a fullsize gopro even without battery...
while some tinys can lift, there is flight performance and hot motors for sure. there is an x8 to carry a fullsize gopro on 2,5" but i guess its either a bad solution.

an example of a very tiny quad lift a fullsize gopro, but good for cinematics is different ;-)

i would suggest a compromise, decease your gopro or choose another cam. the other option for a fullsize gopro is another quad: 4-5" for that weight. those would be known settups for good cinematic footage.

I went ahead and ordered a Cinelog 35 6s which is supposed carry it well. In the mean time I do have a spare GoPro Hero 5 Black.. Do you think its worth getting a naked gopro housing and converting it myself? I have decent tech experience with building computers but I have never soldiered anything. Trying to justify keeping this Qav-pro.. If only they made this version with a 3.5inch frame. That would be the dream. I wonder what Dji has up their sleeve because I hear they might release a FPV mini this summer.
