and if I where you, I would go for 5045 and 5040, so you can try them both and see what you prefer. I fly 5045 and I love them. I'm still waiting for the 5040 props to show up in my mailbox

This is a stupid question but what is the difference between them?

5045 is a more aggressive pitch than 5040. More thrust but drains your batteries quicker.
Current quad: ZMR 250 / DYS SE2205 / Littlebee 20A ESCs / Drone Lab 1500 4S / Naze32 Rev5 / BF 2.7.1
FPV: Runcam Skyplus / Aomway 200mw VTX / Fatshark DomV1

It's a general rule, but it's not always that simple. Some historical example - 5040 Gemfan was giving significantly more thrust while being also more efficient than HQProp. More current example: 5040x3 DYS is more powerful than KingKong.

PS. don't buy DYS 5040x3, they are harder to tune. Some say it's because of more power, I'd say they are crap...

I tried the Kingkong 5040 props this weekend and I must say that they are also really good! They are not as durable as the 5045, so for racing I would go with the 5045 since they are almost indestructible. But freestyle I will probably stick with the 5040s. Propwash oscillations are almost non existent with the 5040s

Ok Great, I will be doing freestyle much more than races (mainly because no one around me races), so I will go with the 5040s. One question, how do I find how many grams of thrust my motors will give?

Easiest way is to search for thrust tests online. Maybe someone has already done it. You will need a thrust stand to measure the static thrust, which can be a stand bought from hobbyking or you can go with the redneck solution an use a digital weight scale. You will see what I mean if you search for thrust tests on YouTube.

And if you really want to go full redneck style, you could fasten your quad with a rope to a bucket with some payload (10kg), put it on the weight and see how much less the weight is when doing a full throttle punch out.

True question is - do you really need it? Truth is that while flying and especially when freestyling feel of the quad is more important than numbers. I recently discovered that gemfan 5040x3 props feel excellent. They are also weaker and break very easily - but they are my prop of choice regardless Wink

If you really want to know the numbers you either research, buy a thrust stand or build your own - google for how to DIY, theres a lot of examples available.
