IPD/PD and goggles
#1
I’m severely near sighted- if something is within about 8” of my face I can see it clearly, anything beyond that and it’s a blur of color.

My last eye exam measured my IPD as 71mm.

I’m using fat shark attitude v6 goggles. In order for me to see clearly and without double vision I have to have both ipd knobs pushed all the way towards my nose on both sides.

Unless I’m misunderstanding something, that would mean that I need an ipd of 64 to not see double.

Is there a difference between nearsighted and farsighted ipd? Are my eyes just stupid?

My budget doesn’t currently allow for new goggles and I’m happy with what I have, but I figure I should figure this out so that I know what will work with my crappy eyesight in the future.
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

I have found to first adjust the focus one eye at a time.
If both eyes get good focus then move the PID so that the screens become one or the two screens merge together.
If you just started using binocular type goggles it can take a while for the magic to happen.
What happens is I see two screens but then one screen floats over slowly and merges with the other.
Your brain will train itself to see one image.
The key is to relax and it will happen.
If your prescription is in the 0 to -6 range the optics should work.
If you are outside the -6 diopter range pilots have used lenses inside goggles by using tpu mounts.
I’m extremely farsighted but until I got Orqa Pilots was going to use
these mounts below.
I have ground down old prescription lenses out of glasses and used mounts similar to the following.
I have tried contact lenses and while they do work the fans in goggles dry them out and I have always needed a fan to defog screens.

My rx is -4.25 & -4.5, so I’m safely in that -6 range, but I do have astigmatism. Maybe that’s what’s causing me to have to move the ipd sliders all of the way in?

I’ve been flying with these attitude v6’s for almost a year, so my brain is well trained to merge the screens together- if it doesn’t happen automatically I’ll make myself go cross eyed for a second and they’ll merge after that.

If I have the ipd sliders pushed out all the way or almost all the way to the outside edges (which is where I think it should be for my ipd?), screens will merge fine and my camera view is clear- but I’ll have double vision on my bottom osd elements. In order to make them clear I’ve got to slide those sliders all the way towards my nose.

I’ve got no plans to purchase new goggles anytime even remotely soon, so this doesn’t effect anything- I’m just curious.

I’m supposed to wear bifocals, but I haven’t in 30 years. Maybe that’s the issue.

Distance is the prescription needed for FPV goggles.
You might try tilting goggles by using different thickness foam.I move my strap up higher on my Orqa and it adds some sharpness.
The edges of lenses are the weakest areas where as the center of lenses is where the best vision is gotten.Bottom OSD may be blurry because the optics are weaker on the edges, just a thought.
This video explains the effects ,in some cases it will sharpen images.

Thanks! I never considered tilting my goggles up or down. I’ll experiment this evening. Big Grin

Thanks Rob. I will experiment with it as well.

We haven’t had decent flying weather lately and I’ve been busy fiddling with builds, so I apologize for not following up until now.

Giving my goggles a downward tilt significantly helps, and allows me to slide the ipd adjusters outward where they’re supposed to be for my vision- which results in significantly less eye strain. Thank you!
