I'm very new to the hobby, and looking for some help.
#1
I've had 2 hubsan x4 quadrotors and a couple of other tiny quads, and I've been itching to get into FPV. I have decided on the Eachine QX90 and the Turnigy 9x transmitter to use mainly indoors. I've settled on this because my budget is under 150usd , and if you have suggestions feel free to let me know. Here come the questions: What would be a good screen to get, or could I use my phone? How do I connect the screen/phone to the quad? Do I need another antenna? How do I set up and configure the quad through the transmitter? Is my transmitter compatable with any of the options for the quad? http://m.banggood.com/Tiny-QX90-90mm-Mic...69614.html Do I need a FlySky TX or FrSky (idk what those mean) transmitter instead to be able to use the stock Rx? I understand the basics of flight at this point, and I can solder if that is needed to put the receiver into the quad. I just have no idea how to set any of this up.

Hey,

let's see if we can help you out.
(I'm not familiar with the Turnigy 9x so please forgive me if i make mistakes.)

All transmitter brands use other protocols and are mostly not compatible.

Spektrum uses the DSM2 and DSMX protocols, FrSky is a brand using it's own protocol and FlySky is another brand using it's own protocol (the name's look alike but they are definitly not the same) . If i'm correct i think turnigy is using the Flysky protocol.

To receive picture you will need a FPV receiver for the signal and connect it to a screen. I think i is possible to connect the RX directly to your phone but have not done it myself.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_q...fpv+screen

I think it will be easier to just buy a budget fpv set --) example:  https://hobbyking.com/en_us/quanum-cyclo...ggles.html  or http://www.banggood.com/Eachine-VR008-Du...694201611X

A new screen and receiver will set you back about the same amount or more.

Setting up the flight controller and transmitter is done using a program called cleanflight or betaflight. You can not simply plug in a battery and start flying :-(

I would suggest to carefully read in using forums and youtube before you make up your mind. There is so mutch information you can find all over the internet.  For example:    http://intofpv.com/t-eachine-tiny-qx90

Hopefully this helped a bit.

greatz

I have a different suggestion for goggles. I've got a set of the Gearbest FuriBee VR 01 goggles and they are great! http://www.gearbest.com/fpv-system/pp_551253.html

They only require plugging in a battery (any cheap 2-cell lipo will work), and hitting the "scan" button. I like these better than my Quanum V2's. Plus these are only $54 and that includes free shipping (HobbyKing will charge you an arm and a leg for shipping). They fit over glasses too if you need that.

I will be doing a full review on these soon, but I can already highly recommend them.

The $150 budget will be tough.
QX90 BNF w/Flysky receiver installed (Banggood): $66
Flysky FS-i6 transmitter (Banggood): $39 . http://www.banggood.com/FlySky-FS-i6-2_4...22606.html (and that price is with the extra 10% coupon)
VR 01 Goggles (Gearbest - linked above): $54

Fortunately, Banggood and Gearbest both have free shipping. But that still puts you at $160. (And you will still need a cheap 2s lipo for the goggles.) . It will be hard to get much cheaper than that though.

Thanks for all the quick answers! I found a forum post showing how to use your phone for a screen (40 USD not including video Rx) http://copterwars.com/blog/?p=64 So I'm going to do that to cut down on costs. I assume I should just go ahead and get a FlySky or FrSky BNF and get the right transmitter for them, and the Turnigy 9x works off of the FlySky protocol so I can use that, unless you guys have other Tx recommendations (I just want a Tx under 100usd). As for goggles vs screens, I thought I would go for using my phone first because I assumed it would be cheaper, and I can always upgrade.

I just read more into the forum post and the creator of it said there's pretty bad lag, and it isn't really suitable for fast movement. I still want to go for a screen, but if it is too expensive compared to the goggles sloscotty mentioned, I guess I can go for the goggles. I can also stretch my budget to 200, but that's pretty much as much as I can go right now. I just want to make sure I love fpv before I go all in.

As I understand it, WiFi for real time FPV (headset) is just not suitable, the lag makes your quad so far ahead of your view that you have crashed before you even knew there was a situation to avoid!

I'm in a similar sort of boat... I saw these Eachine VR D2 goggles. The screen is removable and has a socket to mount on a tripod resolution is 800x480 so a step up from entry level, also comes with battery included and built in DVR (for recording vids) mushroom and patch antenna, for 100 bucks it is something that should hold some re-sale value if you don't like the hobby but good enough that you shouldn't want to upgrade straight away if you fall in love with FPV...

As for TX I'm thinking that DEVO 7 ($65) is a good option - deviation firmware makes lots of models available (but is still in BETA I think?) and you can add a 4-in-1 RF module to expand further... Not sure if Devo 6 is deviation compatible? Cesiumsalami sounds pretty happy with his Devo 7, he has just installed an RF module, maybe he'll weigh in an opinion..?  Again something re-saleable but good enough not to require an immediate upgrade.

Basically I think allocate your $150 - $200 to half decent FPV gear and TX, if your X4 is still flyable you might be able to bind to a deviated DEVO 7 and add a micro FPV cam?

Just so you know - all I own is eachine H8's and E010's (hacked about a little) with toy TX so this is pretty close to my wish list!

The first hubsan I got I flew too high up and the wind caught it, the second one I need to resolder a motor that got ripped out but I can't find the quad. I currently have an offbrand proto x quad I got from a family member for Xmas, which I might be able to rig a FPV setup onto but it is super tiny. Right now I'm set on the QX90 as I don't think i can use my existing quad as an FPV setup. I really like the screen/goggles idea in the eachine VR d2, because I mainly want a screen, but it's cheaper to get goggles and this is both. I want to try keep (everything included) under 150, but it can be stretched a bit if needed. Basically I need a good Tx and FPV screen (or goggles/screen combo like the d2's) for under 180usd.

Currently considering the furibee VR01 because while the etacheable screen on the d2's is nice, many people are reporting QC issues. Saving $50 on the goggles would also be great. So the real question now is just what transmitter to get, so, I saw the Turnigy suggested before which runs on the FlySky protocol so I can bring it that way, but if there's any other good Tx you guys recommend under 100 I'm open to suggestions.

I reas through some of the reviews of the VR D2 it seems that most of the negative reviews are regarding faulty DVR and lag while recording... The Eachine EV 800 are $55 and you can get an external DVR for $18 which shouldn't be too complicated to hack onto the headset, the screen is the same removable 800x480 pix you can put on a tripod...

I think that the furibee is basically the same thing just re-branded but they are a new-ish company so probably take a bit more care over QC..?

I'll prob just stick with the furibee VR01 (thanks for the DVR idea) because there's a sale on them on GearBest making them 45 bucks. The sale runs for a week longer at the time of this post and there are 100 units available. Smile But what do you guys think about Tx's? I can get the QX90 with the FlySky or FrSky receiver, so which transmitters that are compatable with FlySky/FrSky should I consider? I know the Turnigy 9x is FlySky compatable and is 90-100usd, but if there's cheaper options out there I'd rather use them and save.

Just get the RTF bundle (with the i6 TX) it is probably your best bet, but if you want to get into aerial photography or anything you might feel limited by 6-8 channels..?

The i6 does seem to offer pretty good features for its price, but there has been mixed reviews as to build quality, but the RTF bundle on BangGood offers the Turnigy i6 and you were looking at the Turnigy 9x so...

I think I might want to stay with the FrSky platform so then if I really end up enjoying the hobby I can move up to a Taranis and I won't have to get a new receiver for the quad. Or would it be expensive to get another micro receiver? Would I have to solder it in?

There are really good reviews on the FlySky i6, so if I can fix the receiver at a later date if I get a Taranis easily I'll prob go with the FlySky now.

Right now I think this setup will be good:
The quad: http://m.banggood.com/Tiny-QX90-90mm-Mic...69614.html
The goggles: http://m.gearbest.com/fpv-system/pp_551253.html
The Tx: http://m.banggood.com/FlySky-FS-i6-2_4G-...83537.html

If there's anything you guys have to suggest about that or anything else I need (sorry I'm a complete newbie again) feel free to let me know. In total everything costs ~158usd (praise to sales saving me 31usd) which makes me very happy, because that gives me plenty of room for extra blades, batteries, prop guards, and the like.
