Hello from South Wales
#1
I'm new to FPV, and quads in general I suppose. Recently picked up the Eachine Novice 2 bundle to see if I liked flying, and I think I'm hooked. Going to try and build even though I have no experience whatsoever so that will likely be a disaster. But I'm keen to learn. If anyone can point me at useful resources that would be great because I've got a million questions. First, am I stupid for thinking that someone who has held a soldering iron once, in school 15 years ago, is going to be able to build something that defies gravity?

Welcome from the South East Big Grin

Practice is key to soldering. Make sure you get a proper temperature controlled iron and some decent brand of 60/40 or 63/37 leaded solder. Avoid the cheap Chinese branded solders or anything that is marked as "lead-free". Kester, Loctitie/Multicore or MG Chemicals are the brands you need to be looking at. Be warned that they aren't cheap but using decent solder will save you hours of frustration.

As for resources, check out Oscar Liang's website HERE (this forum is owned by him if you didn't already know that), and check out YouTube videos. Joshua Bardwell is probably one of the biggest names in the FPV world for technical videos and other tutorials. His YouTube channel is HERE. There are other resources but those should get you started and you can always come on here and ask questions if and when you need to Smile

Welcome Smile

I have watched a lot (really a lot) of build videos and Drone Mesh has some of the BEST, clear, easy to understand, easy to follow drone builds. Plus, he has a lot of different builds depending on what you want to build.

Although solder used for electronics generally comes with a Rosin core (flux), buy more flux. I have a "felt tip" flux pen that works well for me. The key to soldering is that the metal (wire, pad, hole, whatever) must be hot enough to melt the solder and should be fluxed. Get some junk electronics and practice on that before you work on your build. If the iron is hot enough, it only take a second or two on these small parts.
