Hello form Macomb IL
#1
I have been scratch building and flying fixed wing LOS for over 20 years and have begun to dip my toe into the FPV waters. I have been successful with some rudimentary attempts at FPV with both fixed wing & quads. Where I live, it's an ocean of corn, its easy to get lost while in the air. I have come to the conclusion that RTH is a must have.

I have limited experience with multi rotors, I build and flown a flame wheal quad with a KK2 board. This was a good experience but I'm ready to move on to something with more capabilities. I have flown a Phantom P3P for 3 years. It is a good system but it is not very portable. Something like the Mavic would be prefect but I'm tired of being beholden to DJI. I'm ready to break free from them.

At this point, I'm not into racing or proximity flying, maybe some day. I do want something with similar capabilities as the Phantom but will not take up as much space in my car. Also something not dependent on mother DJI, really tired of paying the price for parts.

Any thoughts or recommendation are welcome. What would you recommend as a next step to break free from DJI and move on from a KK2 board?

A pre-built micro quad? these models don't cost much (around $100 mark) and they are very enjoyable to fly around in tight spaces Smile Not as dangerous or intimidating as those 5", and gets you started with FPV quadcopters - the flying skills needed, experience with Betaflight setup etc...

I have mastered the basic FPV skills, both fixed wing & quad. When it is corn as far as the eye can see, I can't always find my way home.
So why Betaflight over something like iNav? I was under the impression Betaflight was for racing and iNav was for GPS.

Welcome to the forum Smile

If you're doing long range type stuff I would probably go with iNav as it has far more GPS and autonomous capabilities than Betaflight. While Betaflight can of course be used for long range with some limitation, it is better suited to freestyle and racing.
