GoPro Footage looks really bad on YouTube
#1
Hey guys,
I hope this is the right place to ask the question because I am getting really frustrated with this problem. I am trying to upload the Footage of my naked GoPro Hero 8 to YT but it's getting compressed so bad that the video looks awful. I tried different export Settings like Codec, Bit Rate, and File Format in Davinci Resolve but nothing seems to help. I also uploaded unedited GoPro Footage but it makes no difference. So it seems like Davinci Resolve isn't the Problem.
I upload the Videos in 4K.  The 4k setting on YT looks alright but when choosing 1080 it is very pixelated and full of artefacts. When looking at different YT Videos made with an GoPro Hero 8 by other guys the quality looks alot better. I have searched for hours trying to figure it out but cant find any solution to this. I record my videos with Bitrate on high, Lens wide, 4k 30fps, hypersmooth off, sharpness low and sometimes with ND Filters.
I have read that it has to do with the amount of detail when there are lots of branches and leaves that YT struggles to encode the Video properly. It seems true because when iam flying over a field it looks better than close to the trees.
Is there a way to get better quality?

I hope someone can help me out and I appreciate any advice.

Video edited with Davinci:

Stabilized with gyroflow (artefacts worse at 1:38 or 3:53)

If you want quality, don't use Youtube. Vimeo or AirVuz are better. But you will be limited by size on Vimeo as you only get 500mb of storage per week and that is not going to work for 4K. Alternatively if you have a server or some webspace somewhere you could DIY it like Drumgod does, but beware of bandwidth requirements, as you will need a lot of bandwidth for 4K.

I would say just accept that YT is shite, but free. Also when you watch on here, the window size is actually not that big, maybe 480p if you are lucky and AFAIK, unless your computer can do some sort of downscale postprocessing, then it will look crap. if you set your resolution to 1080p; and watch at 1080p (full screen), it's not bad. But downscaling seems to make it look like crap. For stuff on the forum I tend to watch at 720p as that gives the best quality, on YT I tend to watch at 1080p or 1440p. If I'm uploading video for people to watch on here I don't bother uploading at anything more than 720p and if it's going to be a good quality type video I put it on Vimeo.

Looks pretty good to me, but I'm no expert.

Yeah it's not bad, but if you are expecting perfect or near enough perfect, it's not going to happen on YT unless you fork out money to them.

Another thing, maybe try encoding to H264/X264. X265 uses higher compression than 264. Or use a codec that does very little compression. Downside is you will get a stupid sized file. I also don't know what YT accepts, but I tend to export to MP4 using X264 for video and MP3 or AAC for Audio. Downside like above the file is a bit bigger, but you get less issues with video quality. Ideally you would upload something with 0% compression and let YT transcode it itself. But you would be uploading like 10GB+ files and they would 100% want you to pay for that at a guess. But that would offer you the best chance of not ending up with artifacting due to YT transcoding an already compressed source.

Thank you guys for your replies. I allready tried uploading with DNxHR 444 12-bit which should be the lowest compression. But nontheless the artefacts are really bad.
I just wonder how guys like Joshua Turner for example get their videos without any artefacts while using the same camera.
this video for example is shot on GoPro 8 too.

On your video at 1080p, the resolution looks kind of low (if you are viewing on a large screen why would you choose 1080p?), but I am not seeing a lot of artefacts. Does your screen have sharpening or contrast enhancement, that could exaggerate the artefacts? But with very busy scenes (lots of detail) and fast motion there will be compression artefacts. Compared to the Iceland video, that is a lot softer with more motion blur, and overall lower contrast under exposed image - I suspect any compression quality loss/artefacts would be a lot less noticeable compared to a sharp high contrast clip.

4k videos also take time to upload on YouTube, so if you upload and try to watch the video immediately, it won't be at its best quality.
