Goggles Choices
#1
Hi All. I'm considering buying a pair of goggles in the next coming weeks or so. I'm looking at the used market. I would like a pair that can do HD at some point (whenever I decide to get an HD quad), is comfortable, durable and not bulky. My first goggles were the ones that come Betafpv Cetus, I can't see very well in them and they don't accommodate glasses, I wear prescription glass but +1.5 reading glasses work well for me also. My second set are the Fatshark Scout, theses work well for me and I don't even need my glasses to use them, however I share these with my son and whenever I travel for work he's left with the Betafpv's which works fine for him, except for the range. We usually fly in and around house. Inside is fine but the range outside is not very good. So I'm considering upgrading to a nicer set and giving the Scouts to my son.

I am so overwhelmed by all the different choices that are available and I do not know anyone who has a pair I can try. I'm looking at a budget of $250 - $350 used without have to send more on receiver modules. what would be best in class at this price point?

My suggestion would be SKYZONE SKY03 goggles. Used ones should be in your price range and they have OLED screens which look great. You would need to use "diopters" to adjust for your vision as you can not use glasses with them.
They also have a descent built in DVR.

Those skyzones have been appealing to me but honestly I haven't seen much of them on the used market. I have been seeing alot of HD2 and HD3 and Attitudes for around that price range. I'd definitely keep looking and I do appreciate you suggestion

Where do you live. I have seen some on Ebay...

EDIT: I saw a few when I looked awhile ago when I posted, but now I only see the ones in Spain...
They must sell fast.

I live in the Caribbean, but I have a shipping address in Miami. I did see that on in Spain and one in Croatia I believe. I'll keep looking to see when one comes available. If one doesn't, what would be another alternative. I'm like the look of these. I only look on eBay, I don't know of any other for used gear. Oh I did look on this forum as well

Hey thanks for the info. I've been trying to contact the seller but eBay keeps redirecting me. I would really like to get these. However I've seen some HDO's with a receive, I contacted that seller and he's hoping to get $300, they're 1st Gen, do you think this is a good option?

The 03o have been relisted but I'm not able to place a bit, I'm getting a region error. I'll try changing my address and see if that works

Check out the fpv equipment section of the rcgroups.com classifieds. There’s usually a few good deals there. I think there’s currently some hdo2’s for $350, no idea if that’s a good deal. There’s some other decent goggles as well.

I’m still rocking my Attitude v6’s. Big Grin

Oh, fpvexchange.com is another source for used gear.

Thank you very much I'll definitely check both out. I'm guessing you'd fully recommend the Attv6 then?

They serve my needs, and I got a hell of a deal on them used last year. I’m cheap.

I put a Foxeer Wildfire vrx in them, and I’ve got no complaints. I don’t think they have the resolution of more expensive goggles, and they don’t have oled screens, so that’s something to keep in mind.

They do come with a diversity vrx, but I didn’t get a chance to try out the stock vrx much, the previous owner damaged the clip that holds the ribbon cable in place when he put the stock module back in the ship to me.
Dangerous operations.

I love my VR02's, but you already have a set of those. I use them out to about 200-300m without issue as long as I fly in front of myself (patch antenna). I also picked up a clone of the EV800D, just because it was cheap and had a DVR, but the picture isn't great.

My next goggles will be FS Scout or Skyzone Cobra X. The newer Skyzone goggles aren't HDZero compatible (AFAIK), due to the resolution of the HDZero module (or something like that, i believe it needs 720p and they aren't). I've seen a couple of posts and vids online about the issue, so beware of that. I would go for Fat Shark, but be aware people seem to be dumping Dominators every which way, so I guess they aren't that good.

I would probably get another Scout. It obviously works well for you. So get another one. Give the old one to your son. Keep the VR02 as a backup (or if you have someone over who wants to learn to fly).

If not, well I did look at the EV200D. They are in your budget, do 720p, have DVR, have HDMI. So maybe one to consider.

I also have need for reading glasses. So I modded my VR02's with a set of reading glasses. There's a bad picture of them on a thread somewhere.

Skyzone Cobra X are a good option, nice 1280 x 960(?) screen and just about squeeze my specs in there if needed. Can easily fly out more than a Km and then my cheapo antenna's let me down so imagine it will go further with some investment here. Decent DVR and rapid mix and diversity on a proper, swappable receiver make it a good choice. I got mine on offer for 130GPB and am very satisfied with them.

I love my scouts, I would highly recommend them, I fly whoops and honestly my Tinyhawk 2 which has a runcam nano 2 I believe, gives me the best video IMO. I do have a caddex ant to put on my mob 6, but I haven't done that yet. I was originally going to but the Cobra X, had them in my cart and everything. Then the scouts went on sale so I got those. I was a bit concerned when I saw reviews on the Cobra's have a short run time on 18650. I saw a couple videos comparing analog to hdzero to DJI hd and I was amazed. I don't own a HD quad and I don't know when I would but I just want to have a goggles that would be able to when I do. To be able to use it with a sim in a nice add on. I don't need the latest and greatest, my budget doesn't allow for that, but and nice decent pair would do.
How did you manage to get reading glasses into VR02's?. I tried cutting a pair and glueing them back together to make them fit and it was a royal disaster. Then I gave up and got the scouts.

Sorry for the bad photo. Tongue  Shaking hands and phone camera don't work, plus I couldn't find my tripod, or I would have used that. Wink

Basically I cut the arms off, but left the bit that sticks out, that the arms attach to.  I then used blutack to hold them in place.  I was going to make a more permanent job, but in the end they've just been like that for 4 months.  Can't be bothered fixing something that isn't really broken. Oh and FTR, those glasses were the £2 cheapo 2.5x type that get sold in many cheap grocery shops. I had no qualms taking the tin snips to them. But they do work, but were a pain to get past the spongey fabric. Blutack FTW though.

One thing that is for sure, is that coming into Winter/Spring, I need a way to fly while sat in my van (where it's warm).  I reckon if I get a set of Scout goggles or an EV800, I can put an Omni on the roof of the van and send an SMA cable down inside the van so i can connect (and use) the goggles, while sat inside the van.  I'm also considering buying the T-Lite 2 ELRS because it uses an external antenna and I can do pretty much the same thing with it as well. Then I can sit inside with the heater on and still be able to rip a couple of packs.  I just need a launch pad on the side of the door so i can drop the window, put the quad outside, close the window and then fly. Smile  At other times it would allow me to run a DVR in the van and still be able to fly outside.

On the Cobra X and battery issue, I don't think most people who have them use 18650s.  Most seem to use an external lipo to power them.

Basically that was what I attempted but my results wasn't that successfully. I did use cheap drugstore readers but I had to battle them in and when I got them going they came apart at the bridge
