franken-fleet in here xD

i builded an oldtimer a few weeks ago, using only parts years old. an aomway cam, an aikon 30x30mm blhelis, hglrc f405, an old flightclub tokio, ... some noisy 2207 which needs to be replaced :-)

looks like a huge battery for the japalura and those skinny and flexy 3016x3.
maybe you could improve it by stiffer rotors with more rotorsurface or a amallwr battery

That looks and sounds like a fun little beastie.

What kv are the motors?

I think most of my build threads count as Frankenstein builds, I’m a real big fan of using what you have. It’s nice to see another doing the same. Smile
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

6s on 3” props.. I’m also curious about The KV ..I fly 4s on my 3-3.5-4” rigs.. I have flown 6s on my 4s motors by simply limiting the throttle (and my components are correct) on my 5”… but IMO anything over 4s on smaller quads seems to be diminishing returns with the added battery weight.. or am I completely off here?

As for a Frankenstein build.. I use my wizard 220 frame with 3 different size and KV motors as a “fishing quad”… it still has the original PDB and ESCs on the arms.. though I can’t count how many FCs I’ve gone through..
It is fitted with 2 cameras one forward for flight and one facing DOWN on a activation switch (cheater quad). I have a servo also on a switch to drop my fishing lure EXACTLY where I want it..
Old beat up stuff so if ends up in the surf I won’t cry, well not as bad..

Hi N/A,

Nice Looking Build. Cool   Good Job.  Thumbs Up

The build from spare parts that I call FrankenFly-2-4 started with a 4-inch
Armattan Gecko bottom frame plate (yeah, I didn't have a top plate or other frame
parts). Also, a custom fabricated LEXAN plastic bottom plate. Just for kicks, I mounted
2.5-inch Taycan ducts and 2.5-inch props.

It flew ok, but was quite underpowered, so I removed the ducts and swapped the props
out for a set of 4-inch ones. Yeah, I had to add 20mm standoff columns for the bottom
plate to allow for the larger props. Now, we are talking; flies just fine. Below is a picture
of the current configuration:

Thats awesome!!! Do you have pics? I really want to do a build like that. Im into fishing too and i think this would be a great set up to have.

IM running 2850 Kv motors. The overall weight of my quad with the battery is 433 grams and that's the max i would like to go, to keep the ratio good. I do see your point with the 4s but IMO everything comes down to thrust to weight ratio. You got to find that sweet spot of what you like. To light the quad floats to heavy then it drops to fast. I never flown 6s on 4s motors, I dont think it would be the same. I might try 4s battery on 6s Kv motors. What I like about 6s is the punch out!!!!!! and the breaking not bad. To tell you the truth I didnt expect to get 8 mins of fly time on this build maybe it was a little luck lol but isn't that the fun part of building??? Try new things.

Hi N/A,

Thanks.

Using a GNB 3S 1100 mAh (60C) battery, I am getting between 12-14 minutes.
This is about on par with my other 4-inch builds. I should probably do some true
comparison testing to see if the pusher configuration is better or not. I will say
that landing is more challenging.

My first brushless, open prop build, Phantom-X, has a 2.5-inch GEPRC Phantom
frame with arm extensions to allow for 4-inch props. Yeah, that was different.
It has been through many changes and is still my primary experimental craft.
She gets over 17 minutes of fly time using a GNB 3S 1100 mAh battery. Best fly
time so far is over 21 minutes using 2 18650 3000 mAh cells in a holder (not a
pack).

Nice builds!

I have enough parts for 1 or 2 Frankenstein builds but I also have parts for a couple of new builds, so my Frankenstein builds might have to wait awhile.... One in particular I am excited to build is an old Armattan CF258 7" frame with a Naze32 and I have a new in box OSDoge. Nothing like building a new antiquated drone 7 years past it's prime!

Naze32? Awesome... I still have some of those (mini's as well), and even the kk2 that controlled my very first FPV quad. For a retro-frankencopter, I also have a bunch of minimosd boards, apm 2.6's, pz0420's, seawolf's, tx805's, aomways, turnigy 'multirotor' motors w/ prop adapters, and plank props to go with them lol. Almost forgot... also have all sorts of dsm2 and Dragonlink v2 stuff, and an x9303 to top off the frankenkits. Some of the gear is brand new for builds I put off when my kids came into the picture. Oh, I also have about 20lbs worth of FW450 parts, including a boat load of replacement arms. This pile of "trash" could lead to a lot of care free fun these days!

I am seriously considering making my next build with a fw450, 10" props, 3s, old school video, and a modern fc/esc's (since old fc/esc's sucked so bad)... and enjoy some "classic FPV" hehe.

Here's my belated Frankenstein entry. I also love pulling stuff together from broken builds, spare parts and 3d printed "glue"

This is a 3" tooth fairy frame, but I broke one of arm pieces. Shipping was going to be 10 x the cost of the actual replacement part, so I traced it in Fusion 360 and 3d printed with a sandwich technique. First 10 layers Soft PLA, then PLA +. And it's pretty strong! Taken a few big hits.

First iteration of the design wasn't stiff enough, hence the bracket. I've worked out that you can tell if arms aren't stiff enough if the quad shoots directly into the sky in angle mode Big Grin

Back two motors are T-motor something, front are the remains of an original Babyhawk, with 3d printed adapters to get the prop screws in the right place.

The Flight Controller is borrowed from an Atom RC Seagull I was lucky enough to win from one of Oscar's giveaways (thanks!)

VTX is a Matek something I got with a box of parts from a guy off Gumtree who had tried to build a 5" but magic smoked it and gave up.

I'm running this on 4s and it's super fun to rip around.
