FPV and mental health
#16
I've accidentally nearly managed them IRL a couple of times now when I've overcooked an orbit and ended up facing the wrong way while orbiting. But doing them consistently still eludes me. Tongue

Huh. I've been trying to yaw into a trippy spin from a regular orbit... I'm not quite there yet. lol:

http://www.drumgod.com/fpv/clip119.mp4

I just watched the Infinity Loops trippy spin video. I'm with LL on this one... Is his description of the orientation of the quad correct? I'm not seeing how the guad can stay in the air inverted, even with centripetal force.

He's saying it's like this:

| <- pole
|
|     \ <-quad
|

I think it's this:

| <- pole
|
|      / <-quad
|

As for mental health.  All I can say is I like flying much more than I like building and repairing. When the maintenance gets too frustrating I have to take a break until I'm "in the mood" to take care of it all.

I definitely find hobbies, learning, and tinkering help my mental health. I consider myself nuerodivergent, on the autism spectrum, and it is great to find such a welcoming community to help teach and share the excitement of this hobby. It's also a deeeeeep well of information to learn, which is great for someone with a lot of mental energy.
Thanks to all of you for helping me learn and enjoy this great hobby.

It definitely helps me a lot. For once it's something that my skill hasn't instantly plateaued on. It's an opportunity to endlessly learn and improve at something. I love every aspect of it, minus the part where I must wait for shipping. You better believe that if the FAA takes the sky away, I'll still hunt down indoor areas that they can't touch, and I'll also be getting into anything that doesn't fly.

I forgot to mention, one of the things I like the most is encouraging pushing yourself and expecting eventual failure or catastrophe and then fixing it yourself. What a healthy approach to setbacks.

And if flying ever gets severly cracked down on, I'll just keep it sneaky and discreet. Can't keep this bird caged.

Looking good. Yeah I think the explanation in the video is not correct. I believe trippy spin is the same as an orbit, but instead of the camera being pointed down and towards the pole, it is now facing out away from the pole and pointing upwards. That is why you either need more uptilt from the camera or from your pitch so that you can keep the pole in view (or a very tall pole).
It involves learning the stick control to do a backwards facing orbit with the back of the quad facing the pole, and at the same time keeping the camera pitched high enough to see the pole. From your clip, looks like if you yaw just a little more when transitioning from the orbit, it would get your camera pointing perpendicular away from the tree, which would bring it closer to center frame (if that makes any sense).

An orbit you look at the object or person as you circle around them. Trippy spin, you fly towards the object then roll 180 so you are inverted.

In terms of mental health, for me this hobby is not healthy.

The f**king frustrating soldering that goes to sh*t and ends up ruining electronics gets to me. You watch videos on soldering ESCs... Ok, have a little patience the guy says, it takes a little while to heat up the pads. After about 30 seconds his solder melts... I hold the darn thing on for 5 minutes and nothing happens, crank up the temperature to max, nothing happens... WTF? I soldered a failry similar ESC a month ago without issue so what the f**k is going on with this one? Get frustrated and apply a little more pressure on the solder pad and the f**king soldering iron snaps... Ok, get a new one, nothing happens... Ok, try a different brand of flux... no difference... Ok, apply pressure but not so much as last and the bl**dy soldering tip bends. Ok, try a different tip, unscrew the cap that keeps the tip in place, darn threads crack off and yet another soldering iron f**ked up. Ok, I manage to piece together one whole iron out of my two broken... but then it snaps off like the first one... piece of sh*t! Now I get yet another one but go for a differerent brand with different type of tips and now drown the sucker in flux... Success! But now the ESC looks like it's been in a house fire and doesn't work 100%... AAARRRGGG!!!! F**k you, you f**king piece of sh*t!

And the flying part is not relaxing either... gotta be stealthy like a criminal to avoid the Karens, get really nervous I've crashed and destroyed $$$, I've wondered a field anxiously for days in vain looking for my lost quad (I only learnt about buzzers later).

No... this isn't exactly healthy for my mental status...Don't get me wrong, the flying is really fun and I love it, but I can't call this hobby good for my mental health, I'm simply not wired for this kind of stuff.

Yeah, there is definitely quite a bit of frustration involved in it too. I’ve finally learned when I need to take a break and walk away from a build or repair for a night- but it took me a trying to push past that and destroying things to learn that lesson.

If you’re still in the market for a soldering iron that won’t break or bend(?!), I can make a few recommendations. Smile
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

What brand soldering iron was that? Have to be sure to avoid them in the future! : )

This hobby has been the perfect stress relief and mental recharge for me since 2009. Before that I had been searching for something to fill the void, but nothing was really working. I was so lucky to have finally found it.

First with helicopters, then planes, then back to helicopters, then FPV quads.
It's a blend of electronics, software/firmware, simulators, video editing, computers/setup, building/repairing, improvising, and of course flying, all of which I really enjoy. And it gets me outside (without being yard work related) to enjoy nature which I think is a huge part of it all.

That's why this RID/punishing-everyone-for-what-a-few-may-or-may-not-do really pisses me off.
My mental health is at stake.

The one I have now appears to be fine... but if I screw it up I'll be sure to come back and ask!

It's probably a generic one that gets different brand name depending on where you buy it... Here is the Swedish link to it: https://www.kjell.com/se/produkter/el-ve...8-w-p40747

It's weird because I had no issues soldering a very similar ESC, and no issues for years with soldering other stuff. Anyway, the darn things broke way to easy so I now have a different one that was a little more expensive.

Every time I see the soldering struggle posts I wonder if they tried my setup would it work for them. On top of that maybe they're going at it the wrong way and all they need is a little tweak. It's like my buddy was having trouble removing and replacing a motor on his ESC with my old Hakko station. I know it worked the last time I used it but sure enough when I was over there I could just barely melt the existing solder bead. The tip was new so it's likely just needs a new heating element this was exactly how it would fail when using this series of iron in the past. He comes over to my place and desolders and resolders all 4 motors with barely a peep of assistance out of me on my current Hakko setup.

I just wanted to write to express again how good this hobby has been for my mental health. I taught myself a grounding technique I use when I am anxious, like in a very uncomfortable conversation where I am dealing with emotions but it is important to keep my cool. I press my thumbs and index fingers together like I am pinching the sticks on my remote and I breath deeply. This calms my nervous system and helps me focus on 'shooting the gap' in that moment.

When I first started flying, it took every bit of focus to control the sticks calmly and without overreaction. I would have to focus on my breathing, calm my body, and ensure my pinch-grip stayed light. Now I am able to summon that calm focus when it matters the most.

The hobby has been wonderful for me in many ways, but this is a highly personal and successful tidbit that it felt important to share.

Good luck flying, and in all other pursuits.

It's the same for me. Flying is very calming. Another technique you can try for anxiety, is push your tongue into the roof of your mouth. I use it when I fly a lot. But mostly i have to remember to breathe when flying as I often find myself forgetting to, which then tweaks the anxiety. Nice long deep breaths does wonders for everything. Tongue

But I am known to sink a can of Monster or consume some ginseng before flying, occasionally, but mostly when I need panther level reactions. I guess that would be the death knell for you. Wink
