Very new to the forum but have been using you as a wonderful resource!!. I am stepping up from Whoops and trying to sort out a new 2.5 to 3" build. My concern for now is protecting the components from myself as i learn to fly a faster quad, and it's eventual upgrade-ability. I am sure i will be rebuilding these components on bigger frames as i progress, so i would like to get parts that will handle the upgrades.. would be great to get just a little input and some links to the proper gear if you have better options. Right now the build is sitting at $207.00 which seems pretty reasonable i'd like to keep it under $250.00 with batteries so i do have a little room to upgrade. Here's what i have so far... No better group of people to learn your way around the quadcopter world  Might consider a slightly hotter motor, over 4000kv for 3S flying. I have 1105, 7500kv motors on my 125mm and it is great on 3S packs. The Eachine 1104, 6000kv motors work great on the lizard and I originally had a set of them on The Bug, a 125mm micro. With 2" props, there was enough power to get a good feel for flying, but it was very much in control. I eventually graduated to the taller 7500kv motors and shifted to 2.5" props. There are some many options and the fun is finding what works for you. SoCal Kaity :D

it's a little overwhelming and i haven't quite got to figuring out KV's relationship to amps and batteries yet. Yes. Those motors will give you a really wide range of packs you can use.
KV is simply RPM per volt provided. 3800kv at 10 volts DC would net you, unloaded, 38000 rpm. A 6500kv motor, 10 volts will net you 65000 rpm, again...unloaded (read propless).
I use 10 volts for example, but packs are not based on even numbers. A 1S pack is 3.7 volts (nom). A 2S is 7.4. 3S = 11.1 volts and on...add 3.7 volts for each cell.
With no propellor installed, a motor will turn its KV rating per volt.
Also, the taller the stator the higher the torque the motor will provide. 1104 motors will turn higher unloaded rpm per volt, but will provide less torque for heavier props (like 2.5" and such). For 2" props, they work great and will be a little gentler for you you learn on while offering enough power that you will not outgrow them too quickly. SoCal Kaity :D

Personally I have had bad experiences with those receivers and that tiny antenna. Cost me an entire brushed build! They easily pick up interference and the range plain stinks. The XM works great, my go to for brushed when range isn't really an issue. (still good range) The XM+ gives full range and uses diversity. Those hawsky's are a couple of $ more though. So far I have not had too much heat issue with them, but really thought I did until another pilot checked them out after a landing. They have never been too hot to hold against a lip or cheek...so likely they are actually just warm even with the most aggressive props. It was my perception that was the problem and once a more experienced flyer allayed my concerns, all was right in my little world  To the present, now that they have a few hundred flights on them, I would recommend DragonFly motors for a 2.5" lightweight build intened for 3S without reservation. I cannot imagine the HawkSky motors would have any issues. One note, compared to the motors on The Japalura or 5"...I would say the 1105's feel like they are getting worked a little harder.
