if your FC doesn't power on with USB cable, but works with the 5V pins on motor pins... what could be damaged?

Could be the diodes on the top left of this schematic, If it isn't the connector? its almost always the bat54c diodes.

Possibly the usb welds came loose? If you have a heat gun see if reflowing the welds works. Depending on the fc the usb can be a weak point.

I had the same thing but the other way around.. Just tossed it and installed a new one

Could it be the USB cable?

the same problem - my fault was to solder leds (and buzzer) to 5V rail on fc -- found schema in google - after plugging the USB cable fc starts beeping, after switchinng off USB_BEEPER fc stops booting - on lipo works/booting ok ...
