First Build Complete and Flying!
#1
I’ll start out with a shout-out to Lemonyleprosy and Oscar Liang – I learned a lot from both.

So here is a rundown of my first build:

Frame:  Lumenier QAV-PRO Micro Whoop Cinequads edition
Motors:  Lumenier Zip V2 1404 cinematic motor 4600KV
FC:  JHEMCU GHF405 Pro 45A AIO running latest betaflight flash / BLHELI_S
VTX/RX: TBS Sixty9 w/immortal T v2 and Lumenier Micro Axil 2 Stubby 5.8
Camera:  Foxeer Micro Cat 3 low light
Props:  HQ Prop DP T63MMX6 6 Blade or Gemfan D63 Ducted 5-Blade 63mm
3D Printed TPU:  Rear antenna/XT30 mount / Front Immortal T antenna holder
Batteries:  4S 1100 and 3S 1100 MAH Pyro Drone graphene 75C
Controller: TBS Tango 2 Pro
UART1:  RX/TX
UART6: Smart Audio (wired but not configured yet)
FPV:  Skyzone O2C goggles -  I have had these for a while. I may buy a new set or go digital – TBD.

The Board was rolled 180 degrees as it’s a pusher config and re-calibrated the gyro in this orientation.  Motors were re-numbered and directions reversed using the betaflight tools…too easy!  Radio is set to 12 channel to allow use of the momentary buttons on the back of the Tango 2 when I figure out what I want to use them for.  I haven’t done much radio set-up but plan to put more modes other than angle when I get comfortable with the flight characteristics.  Also plan to add pit mode to a switch.  Smart Audio is connected but not enabled yet – I’ll get to that sooner or later.

First thoughts on flight:  DISCLAIMER: I have only done flight testing inside with minimal flight time as its rather lousy weather here in VA right now and I have been sick as a dog.  Its punchy and very responsive with the 4S and 6 blade props.  I plan to try combinations of 4S/3S/5 Blade and 6 Blade to see what suits me best right now.  Battery is under the frame with a TPU printed case to protect the bottom of the battery – I wanted the CG lower as I felt it would be more stable this way.  I am debating on flashing the ESCs to Bluejay to take advantage of Bidirectional DSHOT.  PID tuning will be done sooner or later – a lot more to read before I dig into that task.

A little about me:  I have been flying RC for about 20 years to include fixed and rotary wing (Nitro and recently battery), and DJI quads and pre-made tiny whoops (inductix FPV etc) for a few years, but this is my first time with a full build of this type.  This was a fun first build and I am looking forward to digging into the tuning.  I am already looking to the next build of something a bit bigger and faster.

Please let me know your thoughts/comments/suggestions on where I can improve on the betaflight, and if its worth flashing the ESCs to Bluejay.

THANKS!

Congratulations… it’s official, you have tumbled down the rabbit hole..
Feels GREAT dosnt it!!!
Now, crash that rig … rebuild.. fly.. crash.. repeat. Smile
Your RC experience will play out… strap those goggles on.. and u will wonder what took u so long..
A durable 5” freestyle setup maybe something to look into.. or maybe smaller like a Tinyhawk freestye or Darwin Baby ape.. will help ur proficiency and feel..
Again, congrats..

Congratulations on your first build!

It looks great.
Don’t forget to drop your pid loop frequency down to 4k (you’re running an f4 mcu on bf 4.3).

I put bluejay on pretty much all of my esc’s. Bidirectional allows you to enable rpm filtering, as well as dynamic idle- I consider both of those to be good things. Smile

Also, if you didn’t wire in a beeper, turning on rx_set under dshot beacon configuration and setting up a momentary switch on your transmitter to beep can help you find your quad when you lose it in a bush/tall grass/tree/etc.
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Given the state of the world currently, I would probably look for smaller, rather than larger. Small, stealthy and quiet. Something no one would bat an eyelid at, but still rips reasonably well. I suppose it depends on whether you intend to jump through the FAA hoops when everything that is currently happening, goes live. If you don't, staying under the radar will probably define what you fly and where you fly it.

I have a couple acres of wooded property I live on that I can fly and play on with no issues...and access to a lot more close by that nobody will say anything about - its nice to live in a rural area.
