So, I am an RC pilot flying mostly LOS airplanes for several years - good AMA member - flying at the club field - following all the safety rules - putting my trust in the AMA - etc, etc.... Then along comes the FAA. OK, I am NOT starting a discussion about the politics of all that! (Please don't make such posts!) I only mention it, because that is what lead me to discover FPV racing, and this forum - AND what lead me to build my first FPV racer, AND why I set a goal of keeping it under 250 grams flying weight.
I had dabbled with FPV and AP with planes, and had even built a 450 size quad, so I dove in.
I knew I couldn't build a 250 size racer that light so I started looking at 180s. I found one 180 build that turned out light enough, but only with a 500mAh battery (OK if I wanted only 1 or 2 minutes flight time). I really didn't want to go micro (for some reason, I wanted 4" props), so I found a nice, sturdy, light frame from Force 2 Frames that could handle 4" props: the F2 Micro 160 (Gen 2). It had a 3mm bottom plate, a 1.5mm top plate and weighed in at 50 grams!
Here is the final result:
Parts list:
(The photo doesn't show the camera or VTx, and I didn't use the APP connector to save weight but that's most of the parts.)
And here is the whole thing:
(Still have to replace the connector on that battery).
More to follow....
More to come - stay tuned.
