DIY Bench Light
#1
I don't have a bench light, so I decided to make my own. This is not an original idea. I looked at a few photos of other people's project and went ahead and made one. Very simple, but very effective lighting.

Here is the finished product.

I used a little bit of carpet seam binder, aluminum angle stock, some screws and nuts and LED strip with dimmer.

I went with 12 ft for my 6 ft table. You can probably get away with 10ft. Adjust length for your need. The seam binder worked well because it bends into a perfect arc. I seen people used aluminum flat bars and bend it themselves. Let just say the result didn't look too good without a metal roller.

I cut the angle stock into two 6 inch pieces. There is plenty of aluminum remaining because 3 ft was the smallest piece HD sales. I marked the midway of the pieces marked and drilled two holes that will be within the width of the seam binder.

Assembly the angle plate to the seam binder as pictured below.

Lay down LED strip. I ended drilling four small holes so I can tie wrap the connector.

I lay two strips of LED. I had to solder a wire bridge.

For my 12 ft arch, one package of LEDs was not enough. So I had to buy more. There are mainly three kind of LED. 5050, 3828 and 2835. Go with the 2835, they are newer, brighter and uses less energy. Also go with 5500-6000k temperature.

Once all assemble, just clamp or screw or fixate the angle plate to the bench. The seam binder naturally arches, but it is very steady.

Now I have better lighting. I hope you find this useful.

This is really great Voodoo, I used to make similar creations in my DIY aquarium days. I have been considering getting a ring light, I might be able to make one from similar techniques.

Thanks. Going do your project. I am going to wire the garage with some LED strips too. Super bright. A lot of cool home projects you can do with LED strips. In addition, if you have some left over, you can use it on your quad.

We have a 14ft tinny we go fishing in and my dad and I installed LED strips along underneath the gunnel inside the boat. Very good for fishing at night as the floor of the boat glows so you can see what you're doing without it being in your face and causing trouble with your eyes adjusting light to dark.

That is a cool project. I wonder if you can attract fishes with light. I know when I was squid fishing in Rhode Island, we used to use strong light. And the squids would come straight to the light.

Yes we use big spotlights on the local pier to attract squid along with glow in the dark/fluorescent squid jigs. Never heard of it being used for other types of fishing although some LED's along a fishing rod could be a good safety option as it can be hard to see if other people are casting or waving their rod around at night.
