Converting 3s into 4s LiPo?
#1
Hey all!

I've seen a couple of tutorials on converting damaged 4s LiPos into 3s, however is there anything preventing me from turning unused 3s packs into 4s packs? This seems to be discussed much less than the former.

I have x4 1300mAh 3s Turnigy Graphenes from my beginner days, which don't get much use anymore. Would I be able to turn these into x3 1300mAh 4s packs? Basically adapting these instructions? https://oscarliang.com/fix-lipos-bad-cel...ment-18932

Thanks!

Sure, you will just need to locate a 4s balance plug.

The issue with mixing cells from different packs is that the cells are going to have a different number of cycles.  You could end up with a 3 cells that are fresh and add in a cell that is very old.  Mismatched cells can cause the pack to fail due to one cell over discharging to "keep up" with the newer ones.  That cell might puff at the least, light off at the worst.

I will only remove cells, but never mix and match used ones.

Yeah, good point Kaity. I hadn't thought of that one.

All the same model and brand of packs, maybe all purchased around the same time? They probably all have about the same mileage on them. I would just do an internal resistance test on each pack and see how close they are to each other then decide if it was worth the bother.

Yeah, they are same brand/model/time of purchase, and approx. same usage. I might match the cells based on resistance then.
