Conformal Coating help
#1
Hi,

I smashed all my quads and they all need rebuilds anyway as I haven't really done much apart from semi sketchy fixes for 2 years on them now. I want to conformal coat, but am scared to do so on some of my boards. I have just ordered the MGChemicals conformal coating stuff, and have seen that some people have issues with some of the holybro kakute boards being burnt out as a result of it. I was wondering if this would be an issue for my holybro kakute f7 v1.5 aio I just ordered, aswell as my holybro tekko32 escs which need new heatshrink anyway (and 2 replacements anyway as I recently killed 2). I am scared of burning up my boards after waiting 30 days for delivery.

I was also wondering if these specific boards come conformal coated from the factory, or whether they need a touchup. I know that holybro used to do this on my old wrecked F4 v2 aio and was wondering if they still do this? I know shouldn't touch the barometer, buttons and ports etc, but I am still wanting the rest conformal coated if possible.

Thank you Smile

Not sure how conformal coating can cause a burn, this stuff is not conductive. Maybe they apply too much and that affected heat dissipation, otherwise shouldn't be a problem.
Avoid the barameter, it's a small silver chip with a tiny hole on it.

All my Kakute boards came with conformal coating by the way, get an UV light, that will show you if a board is coated and where the coat is missing. very useful .

I have had trouble with all, a Kakute F7 AIO, Wraith 32 35A ESC's and Tekko32 65A ESC's.

At first it seemed like it was related to my conformal, but I had similar problems without so who really knows. I guess if you conformal it just be prepared that there will always be a chance of something happening.

If it aint broke, don't fix it Wink

All my quads are beyond repair so I'm doing a full rebuild. Thanks for the heads up! I will put it on the other quads instead as the kakute one is by far my favourite, so I would't risk it over water like the others.

Thank you, I saw this on your website and was wondering about exactly this! Just another thank you in general your site and replies to previous questions have helped me countless times and saved a stupid amount of money from going up in magic blue smoke.

Thanks  Oscar. I did not know that the conformal coat was UV visible. Nice. Now, I will be checking my coatings to see if any is missing.  Cool

Kaktues are coated?  Wow thats a really nice coat I always assumed they were not but have not used my UV flashlight on them.

Having had bad experiences with shorts from crashing into wet grass, I probably go way overboard on my conformal coating.  Three thick layers lol.  But I have never had any issues whatsoever that I even remotely suspected was caused by the coating.

What I would caution for those first time coaters is plug in every plug on your electrical component before coating.  So for the FC, plug in a USB cable, plug in open connectors.  This stuff has an incredible way of seeping into tiny nooks and crannies so you want to make sure things like connectors, buttons, mics, baros, etc are either protected or untouched.  And if you do manage to get some into, say, your USB port ... oh boy this stuff is a pain to remove from super tight spots lol.

Don't ask me how I know.   ROFL

Not all are UV visible, but the stuff OP mentioned is Smile

I use MG Chemicals conformal coating. I checked and it is UV light visible. I always keep a UV light hand since I use it with the Bondic product. Thanks. Smile
