Chimera4 on BF4.2.4 & flashed 4.4.0. now problems?
#1
Hi all, Like the title says. Updated to Configurator 10.9.0 then from 4.2.4 to 4.4.0 and now it won't arm and my settings are all over the place with some completly missing like all the ports etc?? Did I miss something that was supposed to be done "special" to migrate from 4.2.4 to 4.4.0? I restored my saved 4.2.4 CLI (back up file), is this the problem? Are 4.2.4 back up's NOT compatibal with 10.9.0 and or 4.4.0?

HELP!

J

I am pretty new to FPV and brand new to this fourm, so if it needs to be in a different section do let me know / feel free to move!

Welcome to intoFPV! We’ll try to get you sorted out.

It appears that not all targets are correctly configured in Betaflight 4.4, and with the new cloud based build you may need to add on options/features.

Unless there’s a feature your really want in Betaflight 4.4, I’d suggest making your life easier and downgrading to Betaflight 4.3.2.

Dumps/diffs/backups from betaflight versions prior to 4.3 are not directly compatible with version 4.3+.

You can try the link below to convert your 4.2.4 backup to something that should be safe to use for version 4.3.x., but it’s generally advised to just do a fresh configuration.

Backups from 4.3.x can but probably shouldn’t be used in version 4.4, it does throw up a lot of errors, so once again I’d suggest configuring it from scratch.

I don’t know if they made versions of the iFlight Chimera 4 with different flight controllers, but if you can identify what flight controller you have, we can make sure your using the right target in BF 4.4 and see if we can figure out what additional settings you need to select when you flash it.

Oh great...... Thank you for the info on that. Ok so is config 10.9.0 backwards compatible with 4.3.2? I really wanted to start trying some kinda longer range pushes and wanted to get GPS & Return to Home Working is why I "upgraded" to 4.4.0 Looks like I may have bought myself a bunch trouble with this? Will my 4.2.4 BU restore back into 4.3.2 through config 10.9.0 or do I have to make other down grade changes? I had a "decent" flyer till last night, now I have paper weight till I get this unsorted  Sad

You should be able to flash 4.3.2 with betaflight configurator 10.9.

You will still need to use the link above to convert your 4.2.4 backup into something compatible with 4.3.

There are no guarantees that what it produces will be safe and error free though.

I or others here can try to help you get on 4.4, but, it may take some time- if you just want to get back in the air, then downgrading to the version you were on (4.2.4) and using your backup, or, going to version 4.3.2 and using the safe migrator link above to convert your backup are going to be your best bet.

Thank you for the help offer and yes I really would like to sort through and learn this! What kinda RC'er would I be if I never wanted "new & better" ?

Thanks!

It looks like you’re using the right target.

Try flashing 4.4 again, make sure you select full chip erase.
Do not import your old backup.

Check to see if your ports are showing up in the ports tab now?

Make sure when it boots back up after flashing that you select “apply custom defaults”.

Nothing will be configured yet, but if it seems like everything is there, please post a copy of your old backup. You’ll need to compress it into a zip file to upload it to the forum, or use a file server and link to it.

With that info, I or someone else can help you figure out what you need to configure to set everything up.

I may be heading to bed soon, so unless another forum member steps in, that will have to wait until tomorrow.

If you’re impatient, you can try running your 4.2.4 backup through the safe migrator link above, and then applying what it outputs to 4.4. It’s not ideal, but it’ll potentially work.
If you do, it’s going to spit out some errors- please copy paste those in this thread so that we can make sure it’s nothing critical.

Ok Lemon, thank you so much. I took a break and walked away for bit, sat back down and re-flashed 4.2.4 and dropped my bu in. Bang, back to where I was when I started goof'n this quad up and burned a pack to verify all was right with the world  Big Grin  I'm stationed in Guam so it's just now 7:20 on Friday night and just got the batt on the charger so......

No I'm not in a hurry or impaitent (that's how bad JuJu happens). On the first run I did "full chip erase" & "apply custom defaults". I will make a fresh bu of where I am and whenever you or someone else wants to chime in, we can go from there.

Now my next noob question is, should I be doing the "Diff command" or just the "Save BU" in the preset tab? AND I just got a Zorro for this and the TH II Freestyle I bought, am I correct that this TX just has 4 AUX channels? Here is my Modes Tab.

Thanks!

Glad you’re back in the air for the moment, and now you know what to do to get back in the air if the update to 4.4 goes sideways again. Wink

The Zorro is up to 16 channels (depending on the receiver you’re using), which will give you 12 AUX channels.

Oscar has a good walkthrough on the setup of the Zorro here:
https://oscarliang.com/setup-zorro/#Zorr...o-Settings

Regarding your modes tab, if you unselect “Hide unused modes”, it’ll populate the various things that it’s hiding that you can then assign to your switches.

Selecting the Save BU button in the presets tab saves a Diff All, so it’s the same as running the diff all command in the cli, it just saves you from having to copy paste the result into a text file.

Don’t forget to attach a copy of your latest backup to this thread, (compress it into a zip file first). After that, once you’re feeling brave and willing to potentially be grounded for a bit, we’ll see if we can figure out what’s going wrong with the 4.4 flash and figure out your configuration to get you running on 4.4.

Ok Lemon, couple quick questions. The BU .txt is only 4.53kb, does that need to be / can that even be compressed in a zip file?
I'll see if it will attach as is, if not I try again. Before all this bumble fu,  I could swear that when I plugged the USB in that Betaflight would show the channels and movement / slider operation on the reciever tab WITHOUT a battery plugged in (radio on of course). Now a battery has to be plugged in? Has my brain gone to mush with this messed up update  Dodgy

Nothing on the software side could/should change whether or not your receiver turns on when powered by usb- whether it powers up or not when only powered by usb is dependent on if it’s wired to a pad on the flight controller that is powered when usb is plugged in.

Regarding betaflight 4.4, I’m still unsure why it’s giving you problems when you flash. I’m wondering if it’s the wrong target, or if the betaflight developers don’t have that target correctly configured.

I don’t want to give you wrong information, so here’s what I’m going to suggest:

Take screenshots of the “Ports” tab, and receiver tab. It’ll make for an easy reference for you in the future.

Go on to the betaflight discord at the link below. Ask them if BetaflightF4 is the correct target for your board, or if you should be using the iflight_succex_e_f4 target, or something else, or if there’s other settings you need to change on the firmware flashing section.
They might even be willing to help you configure it in real time, but if not, once we can get your board properly flashed, we can try to work it all out from there.

I had some issues getting set up to do the update from the start. BF would connect and read my board no issues. But when I tried to update I got several wonky errors in a row (no update), but it didn't scramble anything either. "Failed to open port / connect" and several others. Finally after the research I figured it couldn't hurt to do the IRC driver fixer and then it allowed me into the flash menu. Strange, since this is a fairly new hot rod puter with all the latest updates on Win 10? Oh well it worked.
I'm going to dink around with it today and waste a perfectly good Saturday afternoon to try it one more time and see how it goes. I'll report back and if it works this time I do want to set it up correctly and with GPS  Big Grin
