Car Lithium Battery System 400ah LiFePo4
#1
Hey everyone!

I wanted to share the battery system I built for the back of my car.

I'll start with the basic specs
  • 2x Kings 200AH LiFePo4 Batteries
  • Kings 3000w 240v Inverter
  • Kings 25A DC-DC Charger
  • Kickass 500A Shunt
  • 2x USB Phone chargers (2x USB A, 2x USB C each)
  • 4x 12v outlets
  • 4x Anderson Plug Outlets
Here are some pictures of the finished box

In the picture below you can see how the batteries sit and are wired up in parallel with a 250A maxi fuse in between. The wire connecting the batteries is 95mm^2 and rated for the amps the inverter needs.

In the picture below you can see the fuse box, it has a 300A fuse on the power feed going to the inverter, and then there is a midi fuse block to run the anderson plugs and DC DC charger, and then a subsequent blade fuse block to run the switched accessories like the USB and 12v outlets. On the left is the shunt which all the negative terminals of power go through.

The picture below shows the final product of the fuse box with the covers on.

This picture shows how the setup sits in my car, most of the batteries fit just underneath my roller shutter box at the front, so it is a good use of space, and my 75L fridge fits perfectly.

For now, I have not hooked up the DC DC charger, but I have bought the cable and a plug panel to mount in the back of the car, It will have allowance to hook up solar on the roofracks and externally through the towbar as well.

This will be great when i get back into flying as i'll be able to charge up my batteries all day long, just need a anderson plug to XT60 cable (already made it) and i can run my charger :Big Grin I also will have cold drinks to drink haha.

When going camping recently this battery system has great as I have not had to bring any gas appliances. I bring my kmart air fryer, kmart kettle and my kmart induction cooktop (about $150 for all 3) and I can do all the cooking I need. I have had issues with gas in the past when it has been windy but this is not an issue with the induction.

I have a few videos of cooking from some recent trips so maybe I can post them if there is interest.

Let me know what you think and what you would use this for Big Grin

Nice setup Bffigjam, I've done the other halfs GWM Cannon X with Kings 90L dual fridge freezer, Redarc 25A dc/dc charger and Kings 115A AGM. It's all on an extended fridge slide to roll out for any servicing and battery access. It also fits under the bed roller shutter, just. Also have a folding 150W solar blanket that plugs into the Redarc for day charging if necessary.

I have a small setup in my van based on a Deep Cycle 130Ah Lead Carbon AGM. Charging is via 100W solar panel (on the roof) into an Epever Tracer 30A MPPT, voltage sensitive relay (between the vehicle battery and leisure battery) and a 10A mains charger. I only use it for a fridge, diesel heater, usb sockets and to charge Lipos. While I do have an inverter, it's a small 500W box, mainly used for charging my laptop and occasionally I plug the e3 balance chargers into it if I need to charge loads of Lipos quickly.

My next build will probably use a 100Ah Lithium instead. My setup isn't ideal for the current van. My previous van was a Ford Transit and it rocked 400W of solar in a 2S2P config (two strings of 200W which equated to roughly 36V @ 15A). Plus the alternator on that van could literally push about 70A into the battery, so it was always reasonably full. Had a wood burner in it as well. It was designed for off grid living. Smile My current van is smaller and designed more for stealth.
