best battery mod for the qx7
#1
so im REALLY enjoying my qx7, easily the best investment ive made in this hobby hands down...
the only gripe is aa batteries, why would they make this the default?!
anyways, ive seen a few mods, some of them use 18650 batteries, and some use a lipo batery that can be charged inside the qx7, which is convenient until it fails and melts the inside of the tx.
whats the general consensus on the best mod for this thing? i realistically dont fly all day everyday, but i would like something that can be swapped out when needed, and cheap enough to not be rediculous. 18650 would require a charger, however, they would last a long time, and the chargers are faily cheap for a standard 2 bay charger...

Just use NiMH rechargeables the Low Self Discharge type. This is my preference for transmitters. Lipo's don't like being kept fully charged all the time. You can't kill NiMH by over discharging them. NiMH are cheap so easy to have spares. The best bit is they don't drop voltage suddenly at the end so your transmitter doesn't do a 'Low battery warning' then shut down 5 seconds later.

The downside is that NiMH don't like being topped up and need to be run fairly low between charges.

I've been using the battery for the Promark V70.  Replaces the AA battery tray and fits well.

Rayovac Rechargable and Rayovac Recharable Plus, I use them all around the house lol. I use 2 sets of the "Plus" for the X7 as they are 2400mAh AAs.
Not a big fan of Energizer, the bunny is cute though Wink

I have found the 18650 mod to work great.  We have a lot of those cells around the house for flashlights and such.

The battery case was a couple of dollars through ebay.  I think the cable is an old battery connector cable that had the opposite side of the battery plug.

The only issue is the battery compartment door will not clip in all the way with the case I bought.  It is pretty thick.  It could easily be modified, but in the last 7 months flying with it that way, never an issue.

I charge the cells separately as all of our other devices use singles.  You could solder together a pack of two with a charging lead and forgo the case.  This would allow for the cover to secure in correctly.

For me, a set of cells will last at least a week of my average flying, about 2-5 packs per day with a long day in there somewhere Big Grin

Hey Kaity, whats the dimensions of your mod there? I may try that for my Spektrum DX7S.

3"(L) x 1-5/8"(W) x 3/4"(H).

It is about a 1/16" too tall to allow my QX7 cover to clip in correctly. If you battery tray is a little deeper than the Taranis, you should be good to go!

The DX7S tray is exactly 3" wide, and a little larger in the other two dimensions.

Thanks Kaity, I may give this a shot.

This is what I wanted to hear!
I think I’m going to do this setup, and just get a single charger and have a few plus spares.
The aa I have now get me about 2 days with it dying out somewhere around day 2.
I now fly velocidrone daily for several hours so that’s part of the issue, but until my 5” comes back I have nothing but a whoop and a 2” to fly, and I just super smashed my 2” frame (still works!) so I’ve been mostly velocidroneing and killing these batteries.
That pink case is sweet btw
