Beginner Goggles / VTX / VRX / DVR ?
#1
As you know know I'm building my first true FPV Mini Quad and need to acquire all the other "stuff" to actually fly FPV.

So to share the journey I'm going to ask all those who have come before me for suggestions on good value ways for us newcomers to try out FPV without having to break open the piggy bank.

I'm not sure how much "Assembly" or hacking I want to do, so I'm probably looking for a Ready to Use solution that doesn't require so many hours of Youtube and reading to make work well.

Budget is extremely limited as I'm wary of making and investment in this part of the hobby when my main interest is just in the flying about LoS style.  That's also because I don't have a spotter.

So what are the collective thoughts?

If the box-type goggles are OK with you, these are ready to go with diversity receiver and built-in DVR.  I don't have these, but I have a couple of other brands of box-types that I like pretty well.

Edit: here's a review (BUT the non-Pro version).  Also read the comments on YouTube about solving lag while recording.

Edit2: That review was for the older non-Pro version. They may have fixed things with the Pro.

Good on ya for blowing your FPV budget on a trip to watch the F1 in Malaysia, but don't let Oscar hear me say that! Tongue

So I know that budget is a huge issue... The VR007 ($39.99) and VR008 ($49.99) prices look tempting but don't do it! Neither come with a battery and they both have the 480 x 272px low res screen. The EV800 ($54.99) has built in battery and 800 x 480px screen (no built in DVR though) to add the Eachine Pro DVR ($14.99) will bring the total to $70 + some soldering, which I know you wanted to avoid, (at current BG prices) it saves you $20 over the VR-D2's though...

Thanks Tom - yeah budget took a dive out the window and you're right - all the extras on the "cheap" box-goggles add up so so fast - I have been eyeing off the Eachine VR D2 Pro v2 as they're quite "affordable" at the moment. Not adverse to plumbing in the DVR, but wary about it.

Some of the box style goggles are really getting it right now on both price and functionality.

If you don't need reading glasses, they're a good way to start.

Affirmative - short sighted (glasses for distance) - so no glasses problems.

I was momentarily intrigued by the idea of building up the Quanum el-cheapo stuff, but it seemed like a lot of hard work and hoping.

The formula relies upon the Quanum "box" being discounted, a decent 40ch RX being available and in a design that was a bit more rugged/easy to use, a DVR to tie it together and battery and power distribution to suit all the elements.

It seemed like a great idea until I priced it.

Hobbyking have a few others very cheap at the moment but no DVR again... somehow I always end up needing to spend USD70-100 to get a complete box/dvr combo

Just as a side note, personally i only used DVR maybe the first 5-10 flights, and never again - always carrying a HD cam. So unless you intend to race...

^^ good point - I guess I'm a bit fussy that way - and I'm terrible at remembering to have the GoPro ready Smile

Hey Aaron, BG just listed these EV800D goggles $5 cheaper than the VR-D2 Pro, with DVR, built in battery and also separable, so screen can be attached to a tripod as well...

Stock not arriving till the end of the month though, if you haven't jumped on the others yet..?
