5" Freestyle Quad Parts
#1
Hello,

I joined this hobby in late January of this year, built a budget quad that flew OK, but as I progressed I started wanting something more.

I started just picking different parts to put on my next 5" 4s freestyle build, read a lot of posts, watched a lot of reviews. But once I found this awesome forum I knew that I will need to ask you guys what do you think about the parts that I chose, maybe you can tell me how they performed to you or you could suggest something better.

My budget for this build is around 350$ (really don't want to exceed this amount). Building this quad I really want avoid unnecessary weight, because my current build with GoPro Hero 7 Black and 4s battery is about 700g. I'm still flying analog which I like, although never tried DJI Digital System.

So here are the parts that I'm thinking of putting in my new quad.

Frame: Hyperlite Glide 5" (really impressed of mounting FC in front, ESC in middle and VTX in rear to reduce electrical noise to the OSD)

Motors: Xing-E 2207 2450KV (I already you them on my current build and like them so far, they held up pretty good)

FC: BrainFPV Radix Li 20x20mm (decided to go with 20x20mm components, because why not)

ESC: Holybro Tekko32 F3 mini (this is kind of controversial, because a lot of people don't like them of the desync problems as I understood, but the thing is that I already have this ESC)

VTX: Rush Tank Mini (heard that it performs really well)

RX: TBS Nano RX SE (saved up my money for TBS  Tongue )

FPV Camera: Foxeer Predator V4 Micro (low latency I guess, I don't really understand what is new in analog cameras, I used Caddx Ratel and it was good, saw other cameras comparisons they all seem same to me).

FPV Antenna: Haven't decided, but I will probably choose it that has direct MMCX without any pigtail

Props: Ethix S5 (I mainly use them really like it, maybe I will try P3, I'm not some kind of fanboy of Ethix props, just because Mr. Steele uses them Wink )

Lipo: CNHL 4S 1500 mAh or 1300 mAh (1500 mAh is 183g and 130 mAh is 163g. And I know that CNHL has a sale, but I just don't have money right now and also it's winter where I live so there is no point in buying them right now)

So that is it, I will wait for you suggestions about parts and how they performed to you, maybe I should avoid it, I would love to hear your experience and learn more.

P.S. I live in Europe so to get parts for me is a little bit trickier. Found out that Team Black Sheep ships fairly cheap.

Thanks

What don't you like about your last quad? The frame? Because you keeping the motor, which is probably one of the biggest factor on how a quad feels. Are you looking for something specific with your new quad?

Last quad was ok as I said. the thing is that when I started in FPV I bought cheap Alien clone frame, which right now is out dated, I doesn't have any 20x20 mounts in middle and any mounting holes in rear. I thought about hyperlite glide because it is light, durable, has ton of features and is fairly cheap (Frame + 4 spare arms 73$). I haven't found any similar frame like glide that can offer these features.

For 5" I've always used basic crap motors and thought they all pretty well feel the same. I was under the impression that motors add very little difference in feel aside from altering major dimensions like 2206 to 2003 but 2305/2206 are all about the same and different manufacturers where also all about the same.

Admittedly I've been a big fan of micros just because of the crazy amount of weird combos you can make with a 3".

Am I missing out?

@Supi, I am not sure if the hyperlite glide will be any more durable. Regardless, a lot of us actually like a slightly heavier quad for freestyle. Weight is not as much an issue for freestyle. I just recently scored a Flywoo Mr. Croc HD frame for $25. I think it has all the requirement you wanted. Unfortunately, I just checked and it is sold out for that price.

@Evilsteve. I think the two things take makes the biggest difference in flight is the motor and the motor configuration. For freestyle, I like the H configuration. X for racing/frestyle all around flyer. and stretch for racing, but it seems that has gone out of favor these days.

When it comes to motor, kV and stator size do make a big difference. you want to buy what suits you flying style. there is not right one.
