2'' Drone Build advice for beginner
#1
Heart
Hello,
I am completely new to drones, but I have been interested in building my own FPV drone for quite some time. It is often suggested that beginners should first build a drone that is as small as possible, so-called whoop drones. I want to follow this up, as I find the concept of a micro FPV drone quite interesting. All I need now is a list of components...

The following is important to me for the drone:
-Should be as small as possible (2'' is often advised here).
-Of course as cheap as possible (ideally without remote controller and FPV goggles under 150€, is that realistic?), it should be a budget/whoop build.
-But still fun for a beginner, a flight time of 8min+ would be great.

An usual list would look something like this:
-Frame
-4x brushless motors
-4x propeller
-Flightcontroller
-ESC
-FPV Cam
-FPV Transmitter
-Receiver
-Battery

That should be about it or have I forgotten something?

The reason why I turn to you is simply the following, I would be glad if we could create a list together. Each of you has a lot more experience with certain components than I do and can give me some tips and recommendations for my little project.

Thanks a lot in advance!

why do you like up to 8min flytime, is change lipos after 3minutes no pssibility?

you could go for a 1s whoop than, something you can fly everywhere and which is inexpensive about batteries.
sadly build by your own is mostly more esxpensive than a prebuilded one Undecided

Yeah I don't mind going for 1s lipos. I also noticed that a lot of prebuild drones seem to be cheaper than building your own drones. Was this always the case? Because I mean the interesting part about fpv is the diy part, but if prebuild drones are so much cheaper than I wonder if it actually makes sense to build one one your own.

about value for money, depending on the model, it doesnt make sense to build by yourself as at start. rebuild it later on other another frame, maybe with different motors...
this could be a pnp model to start :-)

from progress in fpv, build your own will let you earn knowledge about the build, as example for troubleshooting.
it might take some time and maybe carry a frustrating issue but will give a honorfull feel when it lifts off :-)

If you've never flown a fpv drone before, then getting a ready-built 1S whoop might be a good first step. It will help you learn to fly, take more crashes, be easier to repair, and allow you to learn about drone setup/configuration/betaflight/radio/etc. You can get a good whoop for around $100 and some will include a battery or two.
Once you are comfortable, then you can start choosing the parts for your first build and you will also have a better idea of what you want (bigger/smaller size? more power? better camera? faster/slower? more battery life? etc. etc.). Building is a lot of fun, but can be frustrating too especially if you are trying to learn everything all at once, it can be difficult to diagnose the source of the problems.

I’m not sure what this would all add up to, but for a 2” build I’d suggest:

2s
2” frame of your choice. I’m a fan of the the UngerCNC Jitterbug:
https://ungercnc.com/products/ols/produc...-frame-kit
DarwinFPV 15A ELRS aio (this board is a combined fc, esc, and ELRS receiver)
1103 motors, 10,000kv to 14,000kv
Happymodel ovx300 vtx
Caddx ant nano cam
2” tri-blade props of your choice

I’ll actually be throwing together almost that build tonight- except I’ll be using RCinPower 1202.5 11500kv motors, and using a walksnail digital 1s for the vtx & cam.
I expect to get around 4 to 5 minutes of heavy fly time on it depending on which batteries I use. I’m sure I could easily milk out a few more minutes of flight time if I was just cruising.

For your transmitter:
Radiomaster Pocket ELRS

Other options are to build a proper 65mm, 75mm, or 85mm whoop with prop guards. Recommend build list for these would be different.

I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Thank you guys for all of your answers. I just have to say that I really appreciate your support, the fpv drone community is one of the nicest communities out there, you guys are always there to help. I'll go through some of your ideas tomorrow and we'll see what my first fpv drone will be...
