what to do with this bunch of parts, 1s or 2s micro?
#1
Question
Hi all,

I'm currently undecided about what direction to follow in building something from a more or less random collection of parts I have sitting on my desk. Maybe you can give an informed opinion to push me this or that way, because I think I lack some of the knowledge still for properly planning a build...

My main question is whether I should go for a 2s or a 1s build - I think my set of parts allows both, despite being not being optimal for either Big Grin . I'm not after the best performance regarding either flight time or punch, but would be content with something that gives an acceptable balance of both. It is basically just curiosity about whether I can built something half-decent from that set of parts (never build anything from scratch before, but did a LOT of mods on BNF quads), and the hope to get a first impression of that much praised toothpick feeling.

I have:

- a noname 115mm micro frame, toothpick style
- a few whoop canopies to choose from
- a Foxeer Razer Pico cam (no real mount yet, but I would improvise something..., or provisionally use one of those crappy Runcam Nano2 that vendors seem to add as giveaways to their otherwise fine RTF quads, I think I have three of them at least...)
- a CrazybeeX FR FC (that does 1s or 2s, and is an AIO, even with VTX on board)
- three different sets of motors to choose from:
 1. Happymodel EX1102 9000kv, with plugs - the lightest of the three, but lowest KV
 2. Racerstar 1103 10000kv, no plugs - ~4.5g per motor
 3. Mamba Toka 1103 12000kv, no plugs - ~5.+g per motor, CLEARLY the heaviest, but highest KV
All these motors are rated for both 1s and 2s, the first two even for 3s (not sure about the Mambas).

- already a bunch of batteries in the 450 to 600 mah range both for 1s as well as 2s (but could of course buy more/new if needed)
- and a Rush TinyTank VTX, should the built-in VTX of the CrazyBee prove to be insufficient/too much below the also limited RX range (probably viable only for the 2s variant)
- a few sets of biblade and triblade props of various kinds in the 65mm/2.5 inch range, again perhaps not optimal but enough to get me started

I am tempted to try 1s, because I already have a Tinyhawk Freestyle and a 85mm whoop, both 2s, and they are actually large and fast enough for the places that I usually fly. But I am not sure what motors to choose for a 1s flyer among the three options, to me as a noob they look either too heavy or too low KV? In other words, would the EX1102 with only 9000kv still work for a 1s build of average weight, and get a bit of acro flying out of it?

If not, I would go the 2s route with the larger motors - I guess I would need to actually try both options to get an impression of what works better?

So, overall I'll just wait what you folks have got to say. If you think the whole thing is totally misguided, I would also take that in...

Thanks for now!

there is no need to choose 1s or 2s, you can try both with the crazybee. you might need an adapter for 2s xt30batteries ?
what esc amp rating has that aio?

the kv need to be compared to the rotorsize, aslong the blades are long enough there is no issue. 1s on 9000kv and 65mm blades will work pretty much like you described your needs: not crazy performance, not slow and some freestyle possible. if you get a bad response on low rpms on 1s, "throttleboost" can solve that.
for 1s you might get best performance if you boost "startup power" and "motortiming" in blheli configurator.

you can disable the onboard receiver and add an external with better range.

the mamba motors are heavier but are known to have a better trust to weight ratio in comparison. they are a bit more powerfull and a bit more battery hungry. maybe they are on the edge for the ratings pf your esc on 2s?

The FC has 5A ESCs.

I know that I can technically fly the same build either on 1s or on 2s, but I got the impression that keeping the weight low is very important for having fun with the 1s route.

I'll then probably try 1s with the 9000kv motors as the first option.

What do you all think about the choice of battery connector? There apparently are many people that switch their 1s batteries to xt30 (from ph2), is that worth the effort?

yes xt30 does improve performance and efficiency. add a low esr capacitator to prevent any spike issue for the 5v regulator. i use some rubycon 220uf 25v.

regardless 1s or 2s, lower weight result in exponential improvement of flightperformance and handling... stay liw in weight and you will receive great flighttimes and topend performance

25V vs 35V is like 50% boost in size. 220uF is common on 3" and smaller.
A smaller quality capacitor MUCH better than huge banggood cap.

So here is what became of this bunch of parts. Some info on the build is in the video description.

I tried it on 1s (even converted a few 1s batteries to XT30), and it flies, technically. But with it hovering at 45% throttle, these flights are just too boring. So I'll keep it on 2s.

a throttle curve can help about hooverthrottle value, overall 1s might be specialy nice for tight spaces, not for proximity in huge area. performance looks nice to me :-)

That video shows a 2s flight, of course, in case anyone misunderstood me to say it was 1s Tongue .

My problem with 1s was that basically, I could only fly horizontally. Gaining altitude takes forever, and recovering from dives requires you to begin the recovery like half an hour before you reach the lowest point. The FC never estimated the amps drawn to be beyond 5A even at full throttle, whereas with 2s, it goes up to 12 to 15A. Part of that would be due to my sh... 1s batteries, likely, but now that I see how nicely this performs on 2s (also with old batteries), I really don't feel like ordering new 1s bats. The effiency on 1s is crazy, though. I could keep flying (even fast) circles for 6 to 7 minutes on a 400 mah 1S, I guess, if I wouldn't crash into bushes or so in the meantime, because don't have THAT kind of patience even for testing purposes.

That, of course, has the right kind of motors for 1s, to still get fun out of it.

1s needs the best batteries you can get, just take one of the 2s apart :-) its a 2in1 xD

you might need to doe some adjustements to get best performance out of 1s - generaly i boost motortiming and startup power to max value. as the rotor authority is a bit low, 1s settups does struggle as example on recover from dives, they often get kind of "propwashish wobbles" ...

if you like to try 1s again, boost your pids, motortiming and startup power as a tray :-)
but nothing wrong with 2s :-)

Frankly, I built my 1S FPVCYCLE style for the hype and I like it.

2S has so many options for motors and AIO boards. With 1S you need very specific components designed for 1S.
