What is your favorite FPV simulator and why? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours
#1
People often ask, "What is the best FPV simulator?"  Well, in my opinion, there is no "best" simulator.  All the popular ones are good and for different reasons and you can learn to fly well with any of them.  I think a more appropriate question to ask is, "What is your favorite FPV simulator, and why?"

So that's why I made this video.  To answer that question.

But I am genuinely curious, what is your favorite sim, and more importantly, why is it your favorite?
Like listening to 80s and 90s music?  Perhaps you will like my FPV Channel.

I have so far Velocidrone, Liftoff, FPV Freerider Recharged and now CurryKitten FPV. Each one has it's own merits and I like the variety of being able to choose from many different scenery layouts in each one but I also like simple easy to set up simulators and CK FPV has so far gotten that right. I did have trouble setting up my controller as the manual calibration was tricky to figure out. Setting the stick movement for each thing was kind of frustrating and in my opinion needs some updating. I bought my version through Steam for my laptop just to help support the designer. Or at least I hope he gets a cut of the profit.

I think that CK FPV has a tremendous amount of potential in that it offers a much different FPV experience with the cars, the plane and the awesome beach balls! And being able to adjust the size of the gates is a huge plus for me as a new FPV pilot. Racing isn't my thing but I think that flying the gates is a great skill builder for me. I hope to see some different terrains to fly in someday. I really like the mountains a lot but I wish that some of them were tree covered so I could practice "tree topping" for my future cinematic flights.

I thank the creator of CurryKitten FPV for creating a very fun and versatile FPV simulator!  Thumbs Up Thumbs Up  Big Grin

Interesting question, cause as a beginner to the hobby (like I am) this question often crosses my mind.

I have most experience with Velocidrone, but also used LiftOff.
In the end Velocidrone gets more playtime because its quick to start flying and it feels like I am flying a drone I own for the most part.

Thanks for making this video. Never heard of CK FPV before.

I find simulators less helpful than other people do.  I haven't used any FPV sims, only simulators for 3D helicopters, and then only with really difficult maneuvers.  The sim was good for making sure I had the stick movements correct, then immediately go out and fly the real thing.  Being 3 mistakes high with the real thing makes learning faster, as there are differences in feel of a sim to real, and the learning feedback is instantaneous.  Being 3 mistakes high usually is high enough to ensure you don't lawn dart the aircraft.  Although..... Cool

I will say that sims are good for entertainment.  Like when it's too cold, wet, hot, etc. to fly for real.  But as a training aid, not so much...at least for this guy. Big Grin

The best sim at the moment is Velocidrone in terms of realism. It provides everything you want. I won't regret it. It is full packed sim in the sim market. There is also second option which is Liftoff. It has better graphics, but my vote always go for Velocidrone.

i like both fpvfreerider, it gave me some sticktime when i was a complete beginner. its only a game today. there was a point where the game wasnt helpfull for realflight, the progress wasnt simular to the game.

i tried dcl and it was ejoyable but i like the physics of freerider much more.
i tought freerider is outdated, i even suggeted sims i didnt try by myself, this was a mistake. i tried liftoff at a beginner-buddys pc (i suggested it to him) - i absolutly dislike pretty everything on the game xD
probably fpv freeriders physics arent the best but the ones of liftoff are very bad in my eyes.

nearly 2years ago, i did a footage of a flight, i was pretty proud about my 14sec lap :-) i found a video of someone did it in 12,9sec or something - i need to progress xD
sadly the checkpoints arent visable in the ingame vidrecord:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fthwgmegekk9s8...8.mov?dl=0

i play in moments i cant fly real; rainy, broken quads, while storage fully charged lipos - rarely

i like freerider about physics, feeling and speedability i dont have in realworld.

Up until last week my favorite sim was FPVFreeRider Recharged. I have had Velocidrone for some time but was unable to use it because my video card would get extremely hot in just a minute or two while using it. I recently tried putting a big fan blowing right on the card, an am now able to use the sim.

I have FPVFreeRider Recharged, Velocidrone, Liftoff, Orqa FPV.SkyDive, CurryKittenFPV, and Worlds Adrift Island Creator.

My new favorite sim now is Velocidrone as it feels the most realistic out of all the sims listed above. Graphics aren't near as important to me as how the quad flies.
I have spent the last couple of days checking out the new "Whoops" addon in Velocidrone and they fly much like my whoops do. They seem a little under powered but changing the whoop setting "Propeller Profile" to 3, and turn on "Air Mode", they seem pretty close. I also like the fact that it installs right on my computer without needing to install "Steam" which to me is a PITA. Most all the other sims require Steam to run them so I will stick with Velocidrone as my favorite and FPVFreeRider Recharged as my runner up...

If your gpu gets hot then try to set a frame limiter or run VSync ON. It prevents your GPU from going full throttle creating unlimited frames.
Especially on laptops this can prevent heating up.

@brettbrandon, I'm glad that you found a solution to the overheating problem. Have you tried the VSync setting yet?

For me, DRL.
It is a lot more usefull for beginners than Liftoff.
It have good tutorial that learn you basics. Later you can find harder and harder tracks to train, and in my opinion simulators help a lot in understanding how drone flies, of course u have to spend several hours with it.

+1 on Velocidrone. The YT playlist for learning is awesome!

@graywoulf
I tried both of the settings and they help. After a few minutes it still gets pretty hot but not as bad as it was. Using the fan, it just gets warm.
It dosen't make sense as all the other sims run just fine.
It is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 TI with 8GB ram running at 1080p. I can run the other sims at 4K without a problem...

I have tried some, but sticking with Lift Off for now.
I do not have Velocidrone, kind of like the graphics of Lift Off much more.
For me, it feels just like flying outside, except from perfectly tuned quad with no propwash and no wind as such Smile

Might get Velocidrone to compare and perhaps join some virtual races, locals seem to prefer Velocidrone here Smile

Which sim would you recommend for learning how to fly a plane or fixed wing LOS? I would like to buy my first RC plane but I think the flying between quads and planes is very different.

You could try the "Wings" simulator. It is currently in beta release...
