What is going on with prices?
#1
I know about global silicon chip shortage problem... but today I checked that less than a year ago I bought FC Diatone MAMBA F722 mini MK2 mini air for 26€ and nowadays I can't find it for less than 50€... prices are going insane... Am I missing something else?

Yeah from what I've heard there are a bunch of the little components that go into a board that have literally doubled or more in price the latest year and now that the old stock of FCs and everything else runs out the new stuff will be much more expensive. Sooner or later it might go down a bit but we all know manufacturers won't reduce more than they have to so I think part of this price hike will be permanent.

No, your NOT missing anything…fc prices HAVE literally doubled….some manufactures have started to used F4 chips in ESCs, not that they are “better”, just more “available ”…

We recently had another discussion about the increased cost of parts in the following thread...

Its 100% true. FC/ESC prices are high. Camera too.

I somehow bought Mamba F40 stacks for under $35USD. F7 stacks for under $50USD.
Many are now $100+ or even $150 https://pyrodrone.com/products/diatone-m...ck-20x20mm

But, for micro builds, JHEMCU GHF411 continues to be a very cheap reliable FC.

Man everything is double now. I still have 2 Mamba F405 NIB and 1 iFLIGHT F4,7 still in NIB. This will last me till the end of this hobby lol.

I just had a mamba f405 loose OSD( no video), almost lost the quad.. it was during flight. The FC still “works” fine except no video.. normally I would just swap the fc for another .$20 no big… well, not any longer.. looks like I will be installing a Frsky osd board. My camera is a caddx ratel.. it has a “set up” osd .. but nothing with “voltage” .. which is REALY all I need..

It is a few different problems, all adding into one. COVID19 has shut a lot of places for a while, and also had a very bad impact on transportation. This transport/shipping problem is going to continue for a while. Plus there was a large fire that damaged the Renesas foundry, making a huge hit to the semiconductor market. And to top it all off, Taiwan(one of the biggest makers of the wafers) is (like a lot of other places right now) is suffering from a bad drought. The manufacturing process for semiconductors takes a LOT of water.

All of this combines, and means that we will be suffering this shortage for a while.

Check out places like Mouser.com and look up the MCU chip on one of your FCs. You'll more than likely see they're backordered. Those chips are harder and harder to find, which I'm sure is a reason for the jump in prices.

Like yesr ago, I posted several times BOM.. pricelist of F411, Fortior, FET, BB2 etc.. showing how we are ripped off. F411 was $2 in bulk. That was when FC was $35.

Digikey F411 today - most sold out or $7

I believe these are all made on 90nm.. and 2010 design. But its a complex global supply chain issue. Not like Tesla or crypto actually use these..

Try not to crash much. or let the motor absorb the impact.
It will take 1year+ to get back

It's not just chip shortage now its also port closures all over China due to the Delta variant. My shipping cost from China practically doubled. At least though this will (hopefully) be far more short lived than the chip shortage.
