Waypoints How to?
#1
Hi!

I have only build a small Cine Rat, and I totally love it! However, I will like to learn more about the technology and also be able to fly long range.

In Spain to be able to fly long range, it is compulsory that the aircraft flies following a waypoint pattern. I understand that you can program a waypoint pattern on your PC using an Ardupilot FC or using a software called INAV.

I see most standard FCs include a port for GPS, but I do not know if this only allows to record the take off position to be able to perform a RTH, in case of signal loss, or if those FC also allow to program waypoints without using Ardupilot?

In case this is only possible using Ardupilot or INAV, which one you recomend?

Thanks a lot for your inputs, I hope that the questions I ask will also serve to other newbies.

Cheers,

Oriol

You will need a GPS/Compass/Barometer on your craft for waypoint mission planning.

From what I have seen iNav has a more user friendly interface for waypoint mission planning.

Painless360 has a video on this:

Also check the iNav wiki on this: https://github-wiki-see.page/m/iNavFligh...t-Missions

Thanks Kafie1980!

That is all I needed to know to get started. I did not realize there was already a section in the forum to discuss INAV.

I understand the Barometer goes with the FC, and the Compass is included in the GPS board. Then you have to pick a frame with enough room for all the components. A 5" frame seems a good pick, although probably someone with more experience than me can do with something smaller.

Cheers,

Going back to your original post you mentioned the whole intention was doing long range. A 5" frame for LR is not the best choice although it can be done but then you are compromising on durability to make things lighter. Perhaps a 7 inch will be better so it can carry a larger lipo/lion pack.

Thanks Kafie1980!

Everytime I enter the forum, I learn something new. I was surprised that someone was able to fly a 250gr quad 10 Km, I thought it was very cool since it allowed to fly without the need to pay an insurance, and next to urban areas. However as you say the bigger the prop the better, probably a 250 gr does not can carry a large battery.

I need to fly more my little quad and explore its potential, before considering the perfos for a next build.
