VAS Pepperbox 5.8 not getting range?
#1
Question
Hey everyone - I'm mounting the VAS pepperbox on my EV800D goggles, and it barely gets any range for me. I actually get more range with a foxeer lollipop, and I know that can't possibly be right. Is there a power requirement for crosshairs or something I should know other than mounting it to the goggles?

I have the older 5.8g VAS pepperbox that looks like this. Is there any reason it wouldn't give me any coverage that you know of? Do antennas go bad?

I have the pepperbox extreme and the crosshair extreme and I still get longer range with my AXii patch. I wondered the same thing myself. I try other antennas but keep going back to Lumineir AXii. I am using fatshark hd3's.

Is the module built into my ev800d just not able to utilize the signal or something? I'm pretty sure I should be getting amazingly long range with this pepperbox, and it doesn't feel like it.

Yes you should and one of our long range guru's is getting huge distances with that antenna and goggles.

Dumb question but is the antenna on the quad the same polarity ie rhcp

not a dumb question - but YES they are both RHCP - kinda crazy but I dont actually have any LHCP antennas.

Double-check you're not using a RP-SMA cable?

How do you have it mounted? While these have a fairly wide horizontal range, the vertical range is pretty narrow. It also won't work well if you're flying behind the antenna obviously.

Did you buy the antenna used?

Do you have both antenna jacks on the goggles connected to antennas?

Are you on diversity mode with the goggles?

Are both the goggles and quad on the same freq?

I was just going to say that Krohsis would be the one to talk about these goggles and here he appears lol.

I tried it with a 45* connector and I tried it with the cable it came with. Both are SMA cables. Here are some pictures of how I have it mounted. Typically I have a madmushroom V2 on (which is my favorite omni by the way), and I'll run the menace RC invader patch or lollipop if I want dual omnis.

Big Grin

BigBeard, diddid this older antenna come with a short cable from the goggles to the antenna?  If so remove and do a continuity check on the cable.

Like V-22 mentions make sure the cable and the antenna are SMA.

Are you running the goggles like that without an antenna connected on the other side?

Do you fly with your head down?  If not the antenna is angled wrong.

Did you buy the antenna used? Cry Yes but from a reputable dealer

Do you have both antenna jacks on the goggles connected to antennas? yes

Are you on diversity mode with the goggles? This is Embarrassing. I got these goggles 10 months ago when I started and I've never changed the source. I've only turned them on and hit search every single time. I turned them on and see they're on RF-A mode, and I'd bet that means they've never been in diversity mode ever. I truly hope that doesn't mean I managed to fly half a mile on a single omni mad mushroom antenna or lollipop all this time. Now like a big goofball, I'm going to go fly it again tomorrow.

Are both the goggles and quad on the same freq? Yes

Hey it can happen.

A 1/2 mile is about what I get with just an omni.  Hope this fixes it for ya.  Also, bring the angle down some if you keep your head level.  Down to about 20 -25 degrees.

Just as a quick follow-up - I flew one pack on my lunch break and was able to fly significantly further than I was just a few days ago. The receiver never even went to the the omni antenna the entirety of the flight, so I'd guess that means its working. It was pretty rock solid and I got nervous when the crossfire went to 1 from 2 lol so I turned around.

Glad to hear it BigBeard!

While we're on the topic of the EV800D, does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement face foam and strap?
