Using Servo Tester To Control Motor
#1
Hi

Someone had a good idea for a project I'm working on which was to use a servo tester to create a PWM signal and feed that into an ESC to control a motor with a micro joystick that's wired into the servo tester.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TQSKLBK/ref...T84ZDRGE45

How do I wire the servo tester's output into the ESC's input

You need to power the Servo Tester with an external 5V supply and then connect the signal and GND wires to the ESC. You will also need to connect a LiPo to the ESC main power wires.

The "Enable PWM Input" option that was available in BLHeli ESC's was later removed in BLHeli_S and BLHeli_32 esc firmwares.

I dont have any quads since being on the road so perhaps someone can offer better advice.

Here is a RCG thread from several years ago where this was discussed: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthre...-PWM-Input

Those videos are for SimonK ESC's.

OP: What ESC's do you have?

It should just work. I use a bunch of blheli and blheli32 esc with PWM in 2 normal planes with just pwm

I'm 99% certain that BLHel_S ESCs still have backward compatibility with PWM input. I'm not as sure about BLHeli_32 ESCs in the latest versions of firmware but I would be surprised if the devs had removed that option unless they are scrabbling around for MCU flash space that is needed for other features.

Pawel Spychalski did a video about a year or so ago comparing the different protocols (DSHOT, Multishot, Oneshot125 I think, and also PWM) on the same quad which he simply just switched the protocol on for each part of the test. He will most certainly have been using BLHeli_S or BLHeli_32 ESCs on his quad for that test.

The OP has a TCMMRC ESC 50A BLHeli_S 4-in-1 3-6S ESC. This one...

I guess you all are right. It probably still supports PWM.

I simply can’t find any documentation on it on the latest BLHeli_S or BLHeli_32 escs nor can I see any options in the configurators.

And then I stumbled across that RCG post explaining it was no longer supported.

Planes without an FC are definitely a clear example PWM still works.

Thank you

I appreciate it

Will I be able to use the 5 volt pad from the ESC to power the servo tester

Yes.

Do I need to connect ground on the ESC to ground on the in side of the servo tester or ground on the out side

I wired it in on the in side

The servo tester lit up and the ESC beeped a lot but moving the dial on the servo tester didn't make the motor spin

Does anyone know what might be the solution

And do you think I might have more success with this

That looks more like a brushed motor controller.

There must be an arduino or pi program that should be able to generate PWM signals to test if the ESC/Motor works.

Yes I have explored the Arduino route and it is very challenging so I'm hoping to use more simple components.

All ground connections are common, so as long as you have at least one ground wire going from the ESC to one of the ground pins on the servo tester then that is all you need to make a complete circuit with each of the 5V and signal wire connections.
