Upgrading Tinywhoops for Better Video Connection
#1
I'm flying five Tinywhoops with 1S indoors and 2S outdoors. Still on analog video system. Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing connectivity issues with my Eachine EV200D and SkyZone SKY04O goggles - the video link tends to disconnect beyond a 100-meter range. Moreover, the visual quality of the analog stream doesn’t quite measure up to its digital counterparts.

I’m weighing the pros and cons of investing in an external HDZero module, equipped with patch antennas, as a $300 upgrade for my analog goggles. One of my queries is how much it would cost to fit my Tinywhoops with an HDZero VTX. Another concern is that the external module may have higher latency compared to a native HDZero Goggle. Is this generally the case with external modules?

Alternatively, I’m thinking about selling all of my analog equipment and making a complete transition to DJI. However, I’m unsure about the specifics of this process. Does DJI support 1S or 2S Tinywhoops? My understanding is that the VTXs are rather large, which may not be ideal for smaller Tinywhoops.

You need time to read a lot more so you understand.

Very basically..............

DJI is too large and heavy for 65 and 75 and 85 quads.

If you add more electronics to existing, it must slow data transfer. Whether this is at all evident to a user is another matter.

Your price to add the HDZero VTX module seems higher than I recall.

You may find that adding range to the VTX only runs you into radio control range issues.

Have you investigated and trialled better antenna ON THE QUADS while staying analogue?

Are you breaking line of sight with these little machines? Even a 2W VTX isn't going to take you very far if you start putting trees or small buildings in the way, and digital systems won't save you from that. I know that on analog I can punch through just a house or two with around 400mW with receiving omnis, or around three or four with a 13dbi patch antenna. That said, I usually don't since they tend to be too weak to crash flip in the grass.

As for digital weight, HDZero is your best bet for tinywhoops, but 2S can definitely get away with Walksnail without too much issue from weight. HDZero has comparable penetration to analog, and you'll be capped at 200mW. Walksnail has superior penetration and caps at 350mW of output, but it weighs more and has latency penalties, especially with weak signal.

In the department of latency, I use Walksnail on my big cruiser quad. Can't feel the latency at all whatsoever, even when I do light freestyling. HDZero will have less than that, even on HDMI. My major issue with these external modules is that they're sorta heavy and drag my goggles down on my face and it hurts my nose. Been considering tripod mounting. They're also going to suck your goggle batteries down faster.

Due to compatibility issues with my Tinywhoops I wont move to DJI for now.

I plan to first try upgrading my antennas to enhance the video stream quality and range.

If this doesn't yield the desired results, I'm considering switching to the HDZero system as it seems promising for smaller drones. I value your advice. Thank you.
