Tinyhawk 2 Freestyle and R-XSR
#1
Hello Everyone,

So I am scratching my head on this one and I am hoping y'all can help me out.  I am pretty new to the flying and modifying so I am here to reach out to the seasoned veterans out there for help

I had a solid crash a few days ago with my Tinyhawk 2 Freestyle, and since I needed to take it apart to do some repairs I figured I would do an upgrade as well.

I wanted to have a little more radio range and still wanted to keep the telemetry as well.  My transmitter is the FrSky X-Lite S, so logically the receiver to fit the bill was the FrSky R-XSR.

Now I did try to do some digging to see if the Freestyle's FC could use it and from what I could find it looked like it could but it was not clear on the exact details for the installation.

There seems to be 2 options with this receiver run telemetry: F.Port or Smart Port and SBUS.

I am looking for help on what exactly I need to wire to and setup in BF to have Telemetry.  I attached the FC layout for someone to show me where I need to wire.  Also I gather there might be some CLI commands I need to do along with updates on the Port tab and configuration tab.

Also, my current firmware situation is as follows:

Flight Controller: Betaflight 4.1.7
Radio OS: OpenTX 2.3.9
Internal Module FW: 1.1.3 (did not want to go to 2.1.0 since I would lose the ability to fly my whoops)
R-XSR FW: ACCESS 1.1.4 (to line up with the Internal Module FW)

So the real question is:  Can I install the R-XSR (doesnt matter which way it will be wired) and get it work with full telemetry?  Or does the FC not support it (i.e. anyone else hook this receiver up to the TH 2 Freestyle and succeed)?

Thanks for taking the time to look and/or help!

-Brian

If you want to use the FPORT firmware then connect the minuscule "P" pad (uninverted SmartPort) on the R-XSR to the TX pad of one of the spare UARTs on the FC, then configure that UART for "Serial RX" in the Ports tab, then run the following commands in the CLI...

Code:
set serialrx_provider = FPORT
set serialrx_halfduplex = ON
set serialrx_inverted = OFF
save

Also, don't forget to select the FPORT option on your transmitter against the model.

Dang!!  That is TINY!!!  I mean I will give it a shot, but this is gonna be a tricky...

So if I am reading what you are saying here.

On the wiring:
Plug in provided pigtail and wire Red to 5V on FC and Black to GND on FC.  All other wires not used and can be discarded (of course after I have confirmed it works.
Then solder a separate wire to the tiny univerted SmartPort pad and run it to TX1.  Since UART2 is being used for SmartAudio it would have to be UART1, correct?

On Betaflight:
Within the Ports tab under the UART1 setting, turn on Serial_RX and that is it (aside from UART2 having SmartAudio already selected)
Within the Config tab under the receiver section have it set to Serial communication with the type set as F.Port and have the Telemetry turned on as well
Finally run the above command in CLI and save.

All sound right?

And on the Transmitter side, make sure to flash ACCESS 1.1.4 FPORT firmware to the R-XSR.

Yes, you need to make sure your R-XSR is also on that compatible version of the ACCESS firmware.

Hi, I was reading this publication because I'm in same situation:

THFS2/R XSR rx/ FRsky X9 lite S tx

After You did and follow all instructions works ok?
Thank You for your answers, my respect for all members.
I'm starting on this after a lot of years on RC Crawler World.
